GRACE JAMAICAN JERK FESTIVAL TO FEATURE THE BEST IN REGGAE CULINARY–CULTURE

With a year of hallmarks, Sunday, July 22 will add yet another reason to celebrate as the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival returns to Roy Wilkins Park in Queens for it’s second staging. Celebrating Jamaica’s 50th Independence and Grace’s 90 years of global service, the 2nd Annual Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival New York will not only offer Caribbean gastronomic delights, but patrons will also experience the best music, entertainment, fashion, and cultural acts coming out of the region. The Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival is a celebration of authentic Jamaican Jerk in its various forms, and includes a variety of vendors offering an array of tasty jerk foods including Jerkmaster Mario from Boston, Jamaica.

Jamaica’s top roots reggae singer, Tarrus Riley, will spice up the main stage and deliver a crowd-pleasing performance with his chart-topping hits for all music lovers. Stirring up the musical pot is another crowd favorite, Fab 5 Band, promising to take audiences on a ride with ska, reggae, dancehall and soca classics.

Mazie Miller, Grace Food’s Top Chef and culinary expert, will be whipping up tasty treats, hors d’oeuvres and formal meals as she conducts interactive cooking demonstrations featuring some of Grace Food’s newest products. Hugh Sinclair aka Chef Irie, personal Chef to the stars, will make his second appearance at the New York festival to once again wow foodies with his culinary creations and unusual take on Jerk cuisine.

The Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival is presented in association with Digicel and VP Records, and is sponsored by Western Union, The Jamaica Tourist Board, Jet Blue Airways, Bigga Sodas, Irie Jam Media, Highbrid Magazine and VitaMalt.

Jerk Festival To Celebrate Jamaica’s 50 and Grace’s 90
ジャマイカン・ジャーク・フェスティヴァル2012

ジャマイカが今年で独立50周年を迎えます。その一環としてこの夏には各地でイベントが開催されます。

ジャマイカ最大の食品メーカー、グレース・フーズがスポンサーについた「グレース・ジャマイカン・ジャーク・フェスティヴァル」は昨年、念願のニューヨーク進出を果たしました。今年で90周年を迎えるグレース・フーズ、ジャマイカ独立50周年記念にあやかってニューヨークでも7月22日（日）に大々的にイベントを繰り広げることになりました。その告知がジャマイカの領事館にて催されました。

ラム・パンチやジャーク・チキン、ビーフ・パティなどが用意されたパーティー会場には領事館という固いイメージとはほど遠いファンキーなドレッド・ヘアーの人たちが集い、ゆる〜い感じ。さすがジャマイカ！カクテルのあと会議室に移動、主催者のグレース・フーヅ代表やイベント・オーガナイザーの挨拶、ジャマイカ大使、領事などが「グレース・ジャマイカン・ジャーク・フェスティヴァルNY」の成功を誓いました。

主催者のエディ・エドワーズによると、「ジャマイカン・ジャーク・フェスティヴァル」は26年前、マイアミを拠点に始めたフード・フェスティヴァルなのだそうです。ジャマイカの名物、ピリ辛のジャーク・チキンが主役の家族イベントとして大成功を収め、ジャーク・チキンのほか、ジャーク・フィッシュ、ジャーク・シュリンプなど「ジャーク」自慢のシェフたちの作品を味わうお祭りとして定着しました。今回はグレース・フーズがスポンサーについて以来11回目を迎えます。

ジャマイカの人たちが集まれば必ず音楽が始まってしまいます。レゲエ、ソカ、アフロビートなどミュージシャンたちのパフォーマンスはお祭りに欠かせません。毎年、メイン・ステージでは有名アーティストによるライヴが行われています。

今年はジャマイカ独立50周年ということで参加者1万人以上を見込んでいるそうです。場所はニューヨークのロイ・ウィルキンソン・パーク(Map)にて開催されます。お昼12時より夜8時まで、カリビアン・フードを食べてアイランド気分にひたる絶好のチャンス。ライヴはVPレコーズ所属の Tarrus Riley です。比較的若いレゲエ・アーティストですが、トラディッショナル・ルーツ・レゲエをしっかり踏襲している素晴らしいシンガーです。ボブ・マーリー、デニス・ブラウン、ベレス・ハモンド。グレゴリー・アイザックスが好きな人はタラス・ライリーに惚れ込んでしまうことマチガイなしです。

This year, the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival will celebrate both the anniversaries of Jamaica’s 50th year of independence and Grace Foods 90th. Festival organizers are promising patrons lots of excitement, in a series of promotions leading up to the event. The one-day family-friendly food festival is scheduled for Sunday, July 22, 2012 at Roy Wilkins Park, Queens, New York.

Title sponsor, Grace Foods, the leading Caribbean food manufacturer and distributor, will again add spice with an exciting series of in-store promotions at several leading retails outlets beginning in May right up to festival day.

The entertainment on the Main Stage will feature singing sensation Tarrus Riley, Fab 5 Band among others as well as a Gospel segment featuring local gospel groups.

カリビアンのお芝居「ママ・ディセンバ」特別公演！

え、カリビアンのお芝居？そうなんです。カリブ訛りの英語で上演されるお芝居、「ママ・ディセンバ」の特別公演がブルックリンの学校で一日だけ開催されるそうです。こういうイベントに出会うと、「ニューヨークならでは。この街に暮らしていてよかった！」と思います。

このお芝居を企画・実現させたのはジャマイカ出身のマリーナ・リッチ主宰の非営利団体（NPO）「バナナボート・プロダクションズ」です。1996年設立以来、ジャマイカ、トリニダード、バルバドスといったカリブの島出身のライターが書いた脚本をドラマ化したお芝居やリーディングを不定期ですが開催しています。過去にもトリニダードを舞台にしたコメディ、「ニュー・ハードウェア・ストア」など楽しい作品をいろいろ上演してきました。まめにスケジュールをチェックしてみて下さい。 http://www.bananaboatproductions.org/BananaBoatProductions_files/BBP-Home.htm

ここで紹介するのはブルックリンで行われる「ママ・ディセンバ」です。イギリスでずっと生活していたジャマイカ出身の主人公のママ・ディセンバ、夫に先立たれ未亡人となったあげく仕事も失い、子供たちにも見放され………と絶望的。これまでの人生を振り返り自問自答してゆきます。彼女のモノローグと亡くなった夫の霊の対話形式という不思議な構成です。イギリスに渡ったジャマイカ人も多いらしいのですが、このお芝居を観るとカリブの島の人々の日常が少し見えてきます。レゲエ音楽とマリファナ、ラスタばかりがジャマイカを代表しているのではないということがよくわかります。

脚本はイギリス在住のジャマイカ人劇作家、ナイジェル・モファットで、主な作品に、80年代に一世を風靡したUKのレゲエ・バンド、「ミュージカル・ユース」をモデルにした同タイトルのミュージカルがあります。興味がある人は是非ナイジェルの他の作品もチェックしてみて下さい。 http://www.moffimedia.com/

Mamma Decemba – Directed by Merlina Rich

Mamma Decemba written by the award-winning Nigel Moffatt is a bittersweet play about an older Jamaican woman living in England who finds herself widowed, jobless, and deserted by her children. Her attempts to cope involving hauntingly honest, sometimes humorous and often painful reflections on her past, raising larger questions for all of us about the nature of life-long relationships

Mamma December is directed by Merlina Rich who founded a not-for-profit organization, Banana Boat Productions in 1996. Ms. Rich believes “Caribbean culture is a rich and multicolored palette of expressions, experiences, and lifestyles that has been woefully underexposed in the realm of truly meaningful theater.”

Banana Boat Productions has produced a number of plays in a variety of venues and boroughs. Some of our productions have been in collaboration with other theatre companies. Main stage productions include Nine to Five Government Style, The New Hardware Store, Have Mouth Will Travel, All I’ve Got, Pretty Papers, Good Morning Miss Millie and Mamma Decemba.

踊るダグラス旅行会社……….？変った名前の旅行社を紹介しましょう。　ハーレムは155丁目出身、ちょっとやんちゃな黒人少年ダグラス・コロンは80年代に一世を風靡した新しいカルチャー、ヒップホップにどっぷり浸かり、ブレイク・ダンスにはまってしまいました。当時頭角を現して来た地元のダンス・チーム、「Bボーイ・ブレイク・ダンサーズ」の一員として活躍、その時についたニック・ネームがダンシン・ダグでした。

その後、ハーレムで暴れすぎてトラブルに巻き込まれ窮地に陥ったことも…….。こんなことじゃいけない、「心を入れ替えて正しい人生を歩もう！」そう決心してダグラスはロング・アイランドにある大学に入学、犯罪学を専攻し、卒業後はFBI エージェントとして命を張って社会に貢献する道を選んだのでした。

え？それとこの踊るダグラス旅行会社と何の関係があるの……..。おおありなのです。FBI エージェントという仕事は容疑者を追い掛けて全米をかけめぐるらしいのです。ダグもその例に洩れず、あちこち出張させられました。旅行が大好きなダグ、バケーションもちゃんととります。それも、年に4回も……..。アメリカ国内はもちろん、カリブの島々、そしてアフリカなど各国をまわっているうちにすっかり旅のエキスパートになっていました。セント・ルシアのビーチに寝そべって空を見ている時にふと浮かびました。「仕事の合間にバケーションするんじゃなくて、バケーションを仕事にしてしまったほうがいいのでは…….。」

FBI のほうは早期引退ということで辞表を提出、さっそく資格を取り旅行業に専念することを決め、2007年の8月、自分の会社、ダンシン・ダグ・トラベル・エージェンシー(DDT)を立ち上げました。持ち前の明るい性格と面倒見のよさでパーティー中心のツアーを企画して大当たり、DDTは昨年2011年までに会員数1,400を誇るジャンボ・ファミリーへと成長しました。エレガントな仮装マスカレード、「パイレーツ・オブ・ザ・カリビアン」といった楽しいテーマのパーティーを催し、参加者はみんなお友達になってしまうそう。アフリカン・アメリカンの仲間たちが作るDDTの旅は音楽いっぱい、ファンキーな体験ができると大好評です。

Dancin Doug Travel Agency – It’s a Love Thang!!

Colon), one of the Original “B-Boy” Break Dancers from the start of Hip Hop and the Kool Herc Dancin’ Doug Travel (DDT) was founded in November of 2006 by “Dancin’ Doug” (Douglas era of Harlem and the Bronx.

Douglas eventually became a Law Enforcement Executive (Special Agent-in-Charge for the Office of Labor Racketeering) with the U.S. Federal Government. He traveled often for work (some say too often) but still managed to take four vacations a year. One day while laying on a beach in St. Lucia, he decided that he would stop working to take vacations and would instead make his vacations work for him.

He initially joined the Your Travel Business Travel Network and became a Referring Travel Agent (RTA). After working hard booking hotel, car and airline reservations plus all inclusive travel vacations for friends and family, and not seeing much profit, he left them in August of 2007, incorporated Dancin’ Doug Travel Agency and became an Independent affiliated Host Travel Agency for Nexion Travel of Southlake Texas.

To date, Dancin Doug Travel has grown from a travel group of 70 members in 2007 to a Full Service Travel Agency of over 50 trained Travel Agents and a Travel Family of over 1,400 members in 2011. The sky is truly the limit!
