ニューヨークの中でも生き生きとした豊かなカルチャーを誇るのがここ、ハーレムです。私もあちこちの街に行きましたが、ハーレムほど住人が自分たち の‘フッド’に惚れ込んでいるところは他に知りません。もともと、デューク・エリントンやチャーリー・パーカーといったジャズやスィングなど音楽の都とし て知られていましたが、現在はジャズの影が薄れ、R＆Bやヒップホップ・カルチャーが幅を利かせています。
私たち音楽ファンにとってハーレムの象徴なのがアポロ劇場です。1934年にオープンして以来、改装工事の時期を除いて地元民の娯楽の場として今でも親しまれています。毎週（水）のアマチュア・ナイトはソールド・アウトが続出するほどの人気です。
そ のハーレムも、全盛期に比べるとだいぶ様変わりをしてきました。ここ10年の間に黒人が9000人減り、白人が9000人増えたそうです。まだまだアフリ カン・アメリカンの文化は根強く残ってはいますが、最近は様々な人種が仲間にはいり、新しいビジネス、ファッション、音楽、レストランなどが生まれ、20 年代繁栄した「ハーレム・ルネッサンス」を彷彿とさせます。
そ の顕著な例が家賃です。地元不動産屋さんの情報によると、ワンベッド・ルームのアパートで1、500ドル（今は超円高ですが地元感覚としては￥130、 000くらい）、2ベッド・ルームだと2、000ドル、（￥180，000くらい）もするのだそうです。20年くらい前はその5分の1くらいでした。
Harlem on the Rise
Harlem is one of the richest, most culturally vibrant neighborhoods in New York City. Jazz, Swing, Rap, and Hip-hop all can trace roots back to this historic neighborhood. I myself don’t know any other “hood” people call home with so much affection and pride.
Today, Harlem is not only a world-famous landmark for some of the greatest contributors to American and African American culture—it’s a neighborhood on the rise, with new families, businesses, and cultural. This once downtrodden occasionally maligned “hood” is experiencing a rate of economic growth and development not seen since the Harlem Renaissance back in the 1920s and 30s—and the tide shows no signs of slowing.
Rentals in the area, depending on location and type of building,generally run about $1,500 per month for a one-bedroom apartment, with 2-bedroom apartments starting at around $2,000 per month.
Various hotspots around the neighborhood offer residents and visitors everything from fine dining to dancing to local talent showcases.
The Lennox Lounge has been restored to its former 1940’s glory and there are so many restaurants to choose from.
Opened on 125th Street in 1934, the legendary Apollo Theater is still a strong draw, offering its wildly popular Amateur Night on Wednesdays.
While Harlem has long been a stronghold of African American culture, the neighborhood is home to a surprisingly diverse group of residents. There are “people of all creeds, races and backgrounds moving to the area,” and it still retains the flavor that made it famous.
