Rick Ro$$’s New Album, “Mastermind” Listening Party in New York

Rick Ro$$ hosted a Mastermind album listening party at Manhattan’s New World Stages last night (Feb. 11)

Mastermind is the upcoming sixth studio album by Rick Ross, set to be released on March 4. The album features guest appearances from Jay-Z, Jeezy, The Weeknd, Kanye West, Big Sean, Meek Mill, Lil Wayne and Scarface.

The event on Tusday was a star-studded affair, with Ross and Meek Mill, as well as DJ Khaled, Busta Rhymes, Mack Wilds, Bow Wow, Jermaine Dupri and other music industry heavyweights.

Ross made a business deal with P. Diddy’s fashionable Ciroc Vodka last year and to show his role as an ambassador for the brand Ciroc cocktails serviced at the party throughout the night.

The listening session started out of the intro, then launches into “Rich Is Gangsta,” a power-track. “Drug Dealer’s Dream” depicts the street life. P. Diddy produced “Nobody” is inspired by the Notorious B.I.G.,’s 1997 track “You’re Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You). The gospel-laced track “Sanctified” features Big Sean and Kanye West if definitely one of musical highlights as well as remarkable “Thug Cry” with helps with Lil Wayne. The album’s deluxe edition includes a bonus track “Blessing in Disguise” that features Houston rap legends Scarface.

The big game is almost here, and that means big parties with big celebs — and best of all, you don’t need a Super Bowl ticket to get in.

You just need plenty of cash.

Kendrick Lamar

How much? Well, if you want to listen to rapper Kendrick Lamar and hang out with models at the Maxim party on Saturday, a ticket will cost about $1,500.

Jay Z

Want to hobnob with Jay-Z on Saturday night? Tickets to the DirecTV party at New York City’s Pier 40 will cost you about $1,300 on Stubhub.com.

Or you can listen to John Legend, Marc Anthony and Mary J. Blige at the Shape Magazine and Men’s Fitness party. But you’ll need $1,500 for a single ticket, or $25,000 for a 10-person table, to get in.

1 Public Service Announcement aka P.S.A. – Jay Z

The Black Album

Jay-Z のロッカフェラ・レコーズ全盛期のころにでた「The Black Album」からのシングル。2003年といいますから、もう10年も前なんですね。月が経つのはおそろしく早いですね。当時、私はブルックリンのダウンタウンにあった「ビート・ストリート・レコーズ」というレコード屋さんで働いていました。このレコードがでた時、「かっこいい～！」と店員のみんなで失神しそうになったくらい、衝撃が強くて今でも忘れられません。ジャスト・ブレイズがプロデュース、ビーツがめちゃカッコいいし、ジェイZがのっかっていて最高です。10年経った今でも色あせず、というより、こんなに渋いトラックとベスト・ラッパーの組み合わせは今ではほとんどありえないくらい。素晴らしさを再確認、という感じです。今でもパーティーの定番曲です。

ジャスト・ブレイズといえば、毎週火曜日私とトニー・タッチのパーティー「Toca Tuesdays」に午前3時になると必ず現れます（笑）。気さくな性格なので、ついあの有名なJust Blazeということを忘れてしまいがち。個人的にもとてもお世話になっています。今は少し方向性を変えてエレクトロでもかなり活躍中！（さすが、賢いです）いつかまた、ジェイZとコラボ曲を作ってくれることを切に願っています。

When ”PSA” came out as one of singles for Jay-Z’s then final album, The Black Al bum in 2003 I was working at a record store in Downtown Brooklyn called Beat Street Records. We all at the store were blown away when we heard the record. I lost my mind!! Produced by one and only Just Blaze and featured one of the best rappers worldwide, Jay-Z……..what more can I say? It feels strange to celebrate this record after 10 years. After all, the song never went away. “PSA” remains a club-and-concert standard.

Speaking of Just Blaze, he shows up at 3 am at “Toca Tuesdays” every week, the party I dj with Tony Touch. Please come out and say hi to him.

2 Suavemente – Elvis Crespo

これはMerengue（メレンゲ）と呼ばれるラテンの部門の代表曲です。こちらでは、ラテン系以外の人でも誰もが知っている曲。ミックス・クラウドのパーティーでラテンの曲をリクエストされたら真っ先に思い浮かぶのがこの曲。アップテンポで踊りやすいし、ダンスが苦手な人でも大丈夫な１曲です。どんなパーテーでも絶対にはずさない、ありがたい１曲です。

“Suavemente” is a huge hit by Merengue singer, Elvis Crespo Diaz in 1998. Everybody knows this song even non-Latino people as it was a hit both in Latin America and in the U.S. This is my secret weapon to hype-up the party among Latin music lovers.

3 Scenario – A Tribe Called Quest

Old School Hip Hopの名曲はたくさんありますが、これは出だしから最後まで大合唱で盛り上がる定番曲。トライブのメンバーとLONS (Leaders Of The New School バスタ・ライムズがいたグループ) のメンバーが入れ替わり立ち替わりテンポよくライムしていきます。途中で変えようとすいるとお客さんに怒られてしまいます。バスタのパートが際立ってカッコいいです。あちこちでカバー（引用）されているのも納得。リミックス・バージョンもこれまた定番曲。特に「つう」なオールド・スクール・ヒップホップ・クラウドには絶対欠かせない名曲といえます。私の火曜日のパーティー、「Toca Tuesdays」では一晩に何回かけてもウケまくりです。

“Scenario” is the song by A Tribe Called Quest and LONS (Leaders of the New School). The song is commonly considered a breakout moment for LONS member Busta Rhymes. I get booed if I try to change record before I play the whole song. “Scenario” is the old school hip hop classic. This is one of few songs at Toca Tuesdays party that I play more than once and still people would go crazy.

How you enjoying holiday season? For this week, I give you all time party classic joints. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane!

1 I Just Wanna Love You – Jay Z

ファレルのThe Neptunesがひっぱりダコだった時期のプロデュース作品。Jay Zを筆頭としたロカフェラも絶頂期。NYのヒップホップが1番きらびやかだった頃の代表作です。懐かしいです。こういうのもっと作って欲しいです……。今では当時の Jay Z といったヒップホップは日本で滅多にかからないとか…さみしいです。こちらではティーンの子供でもみんな知ってますよ。やはり良い曲は良い、年齢関係ないです!　今ではTwerkリミックスがパーティでよくかかります。

One of the Neptunes’s signature songs featuring a chorus sung by Pharrell Williams released as the first single from Jay-Z’s 2000 album “The Dynasty: Roc La Familia.” The popularity of NY hip hop was the highest back then. I still love songs in that era. I heard that hip hop songs by rappers like Jay Z are not being played these days in Japan. Over here in the States even young teenage kids know his hits. His music is timeless! “I Just Wanna Love You – Twerk Remix” is on the rise now.

2 Still Not A Player – Big Pan feat. Joe

1998年に出た、今は亡きBig Punの名曲。ノリの良いリズム、 Joeが歌うコーラス、特にニューヨーカーはBig Pun好きなので、これはパーティの定番です。そんなことを書いてたらHot97でいきなり”Still Not A Player”がかかった！ビックリ…….！

Big Pun’s classic song in 1998 featuring Joe’s smooth vocals still dominates New York party scene. While I’m writing this chart listening to Hot 97 starts playing this song on the radio! See, what I mean, classic!!

3 Killing Me Softly – Lauryn Hill

1996年、フージーズのローリン・ヒルがカバーした曲で、これをかけると女子全員が大合唱します。音を消してしばらく大合唱の部分を作るくらいです。そんな喜んでくれて….DJやっててよかった(泣)な場面を作ってくれる一曲のひとつです。そんなローリンさん、サンクスギビングの前夜にNYでコンサートのはずだったのですが当日キャンセル、最近全然活動ないようなのが少し残念です。

The song Fugees covered on their 1996 album The Score, with Lauryn Hill singing the lead vocals is really popular still today among ladies. I usually shut off the turntable and let the audience sings the chorus. Every time I play this song people react so much that makes me a happy DJ. I was looking forward to Lauryn’s Concert scheduled on a day before Thanksgiving but unfortunately cancelled. I miss her!
