今ラジオでよく聞くし、クラブでもかかり始めました。なかなかいいです。きっとヒット間違いなし。友達情報ではラスベガスではもう盛り上がってるらしいです。やっぱりベガスは早いですね。

ハーレム・ルネッサンスを生きた女優、公民権運動家としても知られるルビー・ディーが91歳の生涯を終えました。NYのニュー・ロシェールの自宅で子供たち、孫たちに見守られて静かに息を引き取ったそうです。

57間連れ添った夫でやはり俳優のオッシー・ディヴィスがなくなった2005年以降も活動を続け、2007年に公開された映画、「アメリカン・ギャングスター」にデンゼル・ワシントン演ずる主役、フランク・ルーカスの母親役で出演、アカデミー賞にノミネートされています。

A Raisin in the Sun

ルビーの女優としてのブレイクは1959年にオープンしたブロードウェイ・ショー「Raisin In The Sun」でした。原作は29歳の黒人女流作家、ロレイン・ハンズベリー、監督も黒人のロイド・リチャーズ、キャストも白人弁護士を除く全員が黒人という、ブロードウィ・ミュージカル史上初めてのブラック・ドラマでした。演技派の代表、シドニー・ポワチエが熱演した主人公のウォルター・リーの妻役、ルースをルビーが見事に演じ、初日から観客全員が総立ちで絶賛、1961年には同じキャストで映画化されています。シカゴの貧民街、サウス・サイドの人種差別問題を扱った「レィズン・イン・ザ・サン」は、これまでのブロードウェイ・ショーの常識を打ち破った社会派ドラマで、以後のブラック・カルチャーにも大きく波紋を投げかけた重要な作品だと言われています。

60年代、ルビーは夫のオッシー・ディヴィスと共に、マーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニア牧師、マルコムX等、公民権運動のリーダーたちと共に闘い、生涯を通して黒人の人権問題人種偏見撲滅運動を推し進めてきました。

生まれはオハイオ州のクリーヴランドですが、「育ったハーレムが私の故郷」とハーレム住人としての誇りを持っていたそうです。

先週の金曜日、ニューヨークのブロードウェイ・ショーの劇場はすべて照明を落とし、ルビー・ディーの功績を讃えました。

Ruby Dee 1922-2014

Actress Ruby Dee died on Wednesday at her home in New Rochelle, surrounded by all her children and ground children. She was 91 years old.

She achieved her breakout role in 1959 opposite Sidney Poitier in the Broadway drama, “A Raisin in the Sun” . . . roles they reprised two years later on film.

A Raisin in the Sun was the first play written by a then 29 year-old black woman Lorraine Hansberry to be produced on Broadway, as well as the first play with a black director (Lloyd Richards) on Broadway.

Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee

Born in Cleveland she considered herself a native New Yorker as she was raised in Harlem.

Her career as an actress paralleled her work as an activist, often done with husband of 57 years Ossie Davis at her side until his death in 2005. She and Davis were close friends with both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, whose eulogy Davis gave in 1965 — two years after Dee delivered a stirring reading at King’s March on Washington.

After her husband’s death, Ruby carried on, winning an Oscar nomination for her role in the 2007 film, “American Gangster.”

Broadway theaters dimmed their lights briefly Friday night to honor the memory of one of their best.

Important collaboration was OFF screen, where they were life-long leaders of the civil rights movement, including the 1963 march on Washington.

ハーレムの目抜き通り１２５丁目の喧噪を逃れ、レノックス・アベニューを南に数ブロック下っただけで、伝統ある教会や瀟洒なブラウンストーン、街路樹に縁取られた美しい街並に出会うことができる。そんな一角に去年夏オープンしたバラワインは、その名の通りワインバー＆ビストロだが土日のブランチメニューも充実。

スピナッチ・オムレツはサイドについてくるローストしたベイビー・ポテトが美味。ツナとゆで卵、ポテト、オリーブ、アンチョビなどがたっぷりのニソワーズ・サラダは素材を引き立てるマスタード・ビネグレットのさっぱりとした味わい。

よく冷えたブランコ・ソーヴィニヨン片手にゆったりと過ごしたい。広々としたサイド・ウォークのパティオ・テーブルがリゾート気分で人気だが、それとは対照的にインドア・ダイニング・エリアには、タイルや真鍮をきかせたモノトーンでスタイリッシュな空間が広がる。夜は地元のおしゃれなハーレマイトでいっぱいに。

Brunch in Harlem – Bara Wine

Brunches have become very eventful in Harlem recently. With the weather getting nicer why don’t you explore Harlem and have a brunch on a weekend? Harlem2Nippon’s this week’ pick is a French bistro, “Bara Wine.”

“Bara Wine” is a romantic and trendy restaurant tucked right on the corner of Lenox Avenue and 120^th Street. When you walk into the restaurant, the clean minimal white space and the insanely perfectly aligned bottles upon bottles of wine on the walls catch your eye. A communal table greets you in the front of the restaurant and as you walk further back, being in awe at how much wine is on display, a small dining room awaits you with tables dressed with wine glasses and shiny flatware.

The menu’s strong on garden-fresh salads and bistro classics, such as hanger steak, beef tartar and roasted duck magret. We ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and baby spinach omelettes and Nicoise salad. Although the portion sizes were slightly on the smaller side, but the food was good. Please be a little more generous with wine pours……We will be back!
