リズム＆ブルースの女王、エタ・ジェームスが亡くなりました。73歳でした。死因はルーキミア（白血病）だったそうです。彼女の初期のヒット曲、 All I could do was cry……….、そんな心境です。

悲しいブルースを歌わせたら天下一品、ビヨンセ主演の伝記映画、「キャデラック・レコーズ」でも登場するエタの歌う 「I’d Rather Go Blind」は本当に切ない、失恋のブルースです。恋人に捨てられた女………、「新しい彼女をみつけた彼が私から去ってゆく姿を見るくらいなら、いっそのこと盲目になってしまいたい……。」エタ・ジェームスの魂の叫びがきこえます。それにしてもこの歌詞、エタ自身が書いたと主張しているらしいのですが女が書いたとはとても思えないのです。女の心理ならば、「他の女を見ないように、いっそのことあなたが盲目になってしまえばいいのに………」となるはず……..。

エタ・ジェームス（本名Jamesetta Hawkins）は、 白人の父親と黒人の母親とのあいだにカルフォルニアで生まれました。 肌の色が黒人にしてはうすいことからピーチーズというニック・ネームで呼ばれることも多かったようです。一時は「ピーチーズ」というガール・グループで歌っていたこともあります。カルフォルニア出身ですが、ひょんなことからシカゴにたどりつき、ムーングロウズという地元のドゥワップ・グループのリーダー格のハーヴィー・フークァと運命の出会いをします。このグループにはのちに悲劇の死を遂げるあのマーヴィン・ゲイが在籍していました。

17歳の多感な少女だったピーチーズがチェス・レコーズの敏腕A&Rだったオトナの男、ハーヴィーと恋に落ちるのにそれほど時間はかかりませんでした。当時チェスはポップな乗りのリズム＆ブルースが歌えるアイドルを探していました。ライト・スキンでまだあどけないエタ・ピーチーズ・ジェームスはまさにぴったりのスター候補だったのです。本気で愛を捧げたピーチーズでしたが、ハーヴィーにとってはただの在籍アーティストとの火遊びにすぎませんでした。ハーヴィーはやがてデトロイトでチェス・レコーズに対抗して台頭するモータウン・レコーズの創始者、ベリー・ゴーディーの姉、グエン・ゴーディーと結婚してしまいます。その時の彼女のホンネが1962年にリリースされた「Stop The Wedding」だと言われています。

チェス時代に「At Last」,「All I Could Do Was Cry」,「Dance With Me Henry」,「Tell Mama」など数々のヒットを放ちましたがヘロインやコカインなどの薬物常習するようになり、エタは波瀾万丈の人生を送ることになります。

80年代、エタ・ジェームスはニューヨークで頻繁にライヴ活動をしていたことがあります。その頃に彼女のショーを見にいったことがあります。まさにブルースの女王です。彼女の語りが感情を帯びて叫びに変ってゆきます。魂の叫びが聞こえてきます。まだ彼女がとても太っている時期で、汗びっしょり、途中で靴を脱いで裸足になって歌っていました。外見なんか気にしない．……、歌はソウル、心意気なのです。Etta James =リズム＆ブルース、非常に感動したのを覚えています。

本当かどうか定かではありませんが、彼女の代表曲ともいえる「アット・ラスト」はレコード会社の意向で歌わせられた曲で本人は実は好きでない、という話を聞いたことがあります。確かにわりとジャジーでポップなバラードでエタのスタイルとは合わないように思います。ビヨンセがオバマ大統領就任式の時にホワイト・ハウスに招かれ、エタ・ジェームスの持ち歌「At Last」を歌ったことはよく知られています。それほど好きでない曲かもしれませんが、エタにとっては他人に「さらわれた」も同然、とても気分を害したことと思います。ビヨンセとエタ・ジェームスの確執！と取り沙汰されましたが、あとでエタが「気にしていない」と声明を発表し大事には至らなかった様子。

ここ数年はずっと病気だったらしいのですが最近白血病を併発し、とうとう73歳で亡くなってしまいました。とても残念です。R.I.P

Etta James, 73, died, Friday.

Ms. James suffered complications from leukemia had been beset with a variety of health problems.

Born Jamesetta Hawkins, January 25, 1938, Los Angeles, California, Etta James is the bold soul queen of the ‘60s who dared to dye her bouffant hair blonde and prance on stage singing from the deepest, darkest, and the most joyful parts of her life.

Originally discovered by West Coast R&B bandleader Johnny Otis, Etta’s first record, “The Wallflower (Dance With Me Henry),” on the Modern label, went right to the number two position on the charts when she was just 17 years old. But the biggest part of Etta James’ career lay ahead of her at Chicago’s premier R&B label, Chess Records, for which she would record from 1960 until the mid-‘70s. It was at Chess that the budding artist would blossom into the exciting vocalist who still thrills audiences around the world today.

Soon after arriving in Chicago with little money, she signed with Chess Records, where her heartthrob Harvey Fuqua was an A&R man. At that time, Chess was looking for an artist who could take the R&B sound into the pop arena, and Etta fit the bill. The sepia-skinned, peroxide blonde was maturing, and her little girl voice could drop from a screaming soprano to a melancholy alto on sweet and beautiful ballads.

She quickly gained fame with hits such as “Dance With Me, Henry”, “At Last”, “Tell Mama” and “I’d Rather Go Blind” for which she claimed she wrote the lyrics. She thought she was romantically involved with Fuqua, but he didn’t feel that way about her.

Between recording gigs at Chess, Etta and groups like The Moonglows toured through the South and East, playing chitlin circuit. As her star was rising, Etta became a vital part of the musical movement. But living the fast-paced life didn’t give an artist like Etta time to sit back and rejoice at the impact R&B was having on society. It was lonely and hard for a young woman on the road, and her love for Fuqua went unrequited. Soon she was using heroin to ease the pain, and like so many other talented musicians, Etta became a drug addict by the time she was 21.

Eventually Fuqua went on to Detroit to help Motown Records get off the ground and married Gwen Gordy, the elder sister of the Detroit label’s founder, Berry Gordy. Etta remained in Chicago cranking out hits like “Stop The Wedding,” a song that cried out her feeling about Fuqua’s marriage.

I saw Etta James live in New York in ‘80s. Everything she sings, you believe her, even if she never wrote a word of it herself. She shouts out many of the soul songs then she’ll croon a bluesy ballad like a woman who’s been there and survived.

Ms. James is survived by her husband of 42 years, Artis Mills, and sons Donto and Sametto James.
