Cuba Gooding Sr. graces Apollo Theater stage one last time as family bids the singer farewell at memorial

Cuba Gooding Sr., the late R&B soul singer who sang lead vocals for the legendary “Main Ingredient”, was memorialized at the Apollo Theater on Saturday.

As lead vocalist of the Grammy nominated “Main Ingredient” since 1972, Cuba Sr. lifted the group to world prominence with such hit songs as “Everybody Plays The Fool,” “Just Don’t Want to be Lonely,” “Rolling Down a Mountainside,” “Happiness is Just Around the Bend,” “You’ve Got To Take It (If You Want It).” Other “Main Ingredient” chart-toppers were “You’ve Been My Inspiration,” “Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling in Love), “I’m So Proud” among many others.

Some 150 people, including his children Omar, April and Tommy, turned out for a heartfelt sendoff to the late Gooding at the landmark only blocks from his childhood Harlem home.

His son, Oscar-winning offspring Cuba Gooding Jr. did not attend the two-hour memorial, according to the family.

Gooding Sr. served as front man for The Main Ingredient, joining the band just in time for their biggest charting hits: “Everybody Plays the Fool” reached No. 3 in 1972, and “Just Don’t Want to Be Lonely” hit No. 10 in 1974.

Gooding Sr. was found dead April 20 inside his silver Jaguar in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles in the middle of the afternoon.

The cause of death remains under investigation, with reports indicating police suspected a drug overdose.

INDIANAPOLIS, March 30, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Emmis Communications (NASDAQ: EMMS) today announced that the world’s largest Hip Hop concert, HOT 97 Summer Jam on June 5, 2016 at MetLife Stadium, will expand internationally with the launch of HOT 97 Summer Jam Tokyo in July 2016.

Emmis has signed a multi-year license agreement with Avex Live Creative, Japan’s premiere entertainment production & management company, a division of Avex Group Holdings. As part of this arrangement for Summer Jam Tokyo, Avex will also utilize Trevanna Entertainment, the production team behind Summer Jam at MetLife Stadium.

Now in its 23rd year, HOT 97 Summer Jam is a day-long, two-stage celebration of Hip Hop attracting more than 55,000 fans and the genre’s top names. Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, and more have previously performed. The annual festival is famous for their surprise, unannounced musical guests.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

そして、2月19日（金）、ブルックリンのキングス・シアターで歌姫、チャカ・カーンの公演が開催されました。これまでにグラミー賞10部門受賞した実力派ディーヴァの迫力あるライヴが観られるチャンスです。あまり知られていませんが、チャカ・カーンはまだティーンの頃、ブラック・パンサーのシカゴ支部に所属していたことがあります。まさに、ブラック・ヒストリー・マンスにふさわしいイベントだと思います。その貴重なライヴのようすをレポートしましょう。

黒のロング・ブーツにワイン・カラーのローブ、ウェストに黒いベルトをきっちり締めてステージに現れたチャカ、”Do You Love What You Feel,” “I Feel For You” などヒット曲を披露、

力強いヴォーカルで観客を圧倒します。“I Feel For You” はプリンスが作ったトラックにラッパー、グランドマスター・メリー・メルの♪♪Ch-ch-ch-chaka-chaka-chaka Khan♪ というラップで一躍チャートに躍り出たヒット曲なのですが、実はチャカはあまり好きでない曲なのだそうです。チャカ・カーン、チャカ・カーンと何度も名前を呼ばれるのがうっとおしいのだとか……。この日のライヴでも、ほとんどイントロのみで曲をカットしてしまいました。

チャカのライヴは舞台演出等は全くなし。バンドとバック・シンガーと本人のみ、音楽で勝負という姿勢が私はとても好きです。ヴォーカルが命。粋ですね。本人もステージの上が一番リラックスできるらしく、アットホームな空気が伝わります。床にソング・リストが書いてある紙が貼ってあるらしいのですが、文字が小さくて読めない様子。「え、何て書いてあるの。次はどの曲?」と、まぁ、ゆるい感じで進行してゆきます。中盤、「あ、ちょっと何かが壊れちゃった。フィックスしてくるので待っててね。」と意味不明なセリフを残して楽屋に消えてしまいました。残されたバンドとバック・シンガーたち、この窮地をどう乗り切るのか……..。バンド・リーダーらしきギター・プレーヤーがあたりさわりのないインストでこの場を取り繕います（汗）。

しばらく経ってチャカ再登場。お色直しをして今度は黒の衣装、ハイヒールのブーツは脱いできてしまって裸足で歩き回ります。チャカのカバーで大ヒットした”Papillon (Hot Butterfly)”を熱唱します。

次の曲のイントロが流れると、チャカが「この曲はもともとはインストルメンタルだったの。それに作詞をしてくれたのが、え～と、誰だったかな、あ、そうそうデヴィッド・フォスター。」と紹介してくれたのが、あのカニエ・ウエストがサンプリングして大ブレイクした”Through The Fire” です。カニエのバージョンはパロディらしく “Through The Wire” ですが。

“Sweet Thing,” “My Funny Valentine” と、ヒット・メドレーで綴ります。ダイナミックな歌声、62歳という年齢を感じさせません。“Tell Me Something Good” はほとんど客席にマイクを向けて大合唱。ところが衣装に支障をきたしたとかでブレークをとったため時間切れとなり、本来ならばフィナーレ曲ではない“I’m Every Woman”を歌って「チャカ・カーンとの夕べ」は幕を降ろすことに・・・！

おかげでみんなが聞きたかった「あのフィナーレ曲」はカットせざるを得なくなってしまいました！　この緊急事態？に、私の席の後ろにいた熱狂的ファンらしきオジさん二人、「まだ”Ain’t Nobody”を歌っていないぞ。エイン・ノー・バーーーディ! 」と叫び、♪♪Captured effortlessly/That’s the way it was/Happened so naturally……….Oh oh oh oh/Ain’t nobody/Loves me better….♪と歌い出し、往生際の悪さをさらけ出す始末。それが、オンチで……..。ま、そこがファンキーなブルックリンの楽しいところでもあるのですが…….。

ライブが終わったのは夜中の12時過ぎ。ちなみに帰りに通りかかった地元の床屋はまだオープンしていて満員御礼でした。

<ブルックリン・キングス・シアター>

改装工事をしてすっかり生まれ変わったブルックリンのキングス・シアター。昨年2月に再オープン、こけら落としはダイアナ・ロスをフィーチャーしたライヴ・ショーでした。すっかり細くなって若返ったグラディス・ナイトもこのエレガントはキングス・シアターでライヴを行いました。
