The NWA biopic “Straight Outta Comptonopened on Friday, August 14 has been receiving rave reviews.

The film profiles N.W.A, the musical group credited with helping to popularize gansta rap. Its depictions of racial tension and police brutality seemed to resonate with audiences still grappling with the aftermath of the deaths of young African-American men Freddie Gray and Michael Brown.

O'Shea Jackson Jr
There had been rumors of Lil Eazy E playing his late father Eazy-E but it didn’t work out and Jason Mitchell got that part (he did a great job.) O’shea Jackson Jr., Ice Cube’s own son played Ice Cube and a new comer Corey Hawkins played Dr. Dre.

After their debut album Straight Outta Compton is released and becomes a smash hit, N.W.A goes on a national tour across the United States. Along the way, the group encounters many protests directed against them.

Clearly African-American rage at the militaristic tactics of the largely white occupying force of police in their communities is nothing new, not now and not in August 1988 when N.W.A.’s groundbreaking album “Straight Outta Compton” was released.

Corey Hawkins
There is one scene in the movie when the group, taking a break in the midst of a recording session, are set upon by cops — one of them is even black — looking to jam them for no other reason than their momentary presence outside the studio on the street. We see the tension between LAPD and black kids in the ‘hoods that eventually made the group to create the most controversial song “F**k tha Police” acting as an angry reaction to police violence perpetuated in some of L.A.’s most ignored hoods.

NWA
The FBI so wanted to extinguish the powerful flame that was “F*ck tha Police” that they sent a sternly worded letter to Priority Records and N.W.A, the first time they had ever done so for an album. But that letter was the best thing that could have happened to N.W.A., though. The marketing genius Eazy decided to send the letter to the press, which stirred up a whole new level of interest in Compton. They went from just being locals in L.A. to tangling with some of the biggest power entities out there. The negative attention only gave N.W.A further fame and with it, album sales………

The onscreen confrontations with the LAPD build to the Rodney King beating, which we see the stars watching. Eazy E is outraged by the footage. Nods DJ Yella (Neil Brown Jr.), “At least we got those muthafuckas on video.” How grim is it to watch this scene in 2015 and admit that long after N.W.A.’s brave feud with the FBI, things have actually gotten worse? Now we have even more cameras — yet the victims so often are dead.

Tupac was also in the film played by Marcc Rose, a spitting image of the man. I was hard to believe that the guy with backwards bandana and all in the studio rapping Dre produced “California Love” wasn’t Pac. Believe me, you would think that was an actual footage from the recording session. It’s no wonder Rose was tapped to play the fallen legend for John Singleton’s Tupac biopic.

SugeKnightP.S.

Suge Knight was not invited to the promo shoot, but dropped in unannounced after hearing that a “Suge look-alike” had been hired to appear in the film. It was reported that Ice Cube, a founding N.W.A. member left the set when the fatal crash occurred. As the saying goes, there’s “no such thing as bad publicity”. Thanks to Suge Knight who is back to jail again.

  1. We In Da City (Remix) – Young Dro f/ T.I.

Young Dro gave us a new single by the name of “We In Da Cidy” back in February and now we get a remix that features T.I. which being played currently at the most of the clubs. The slow-tempo new dancefloor shaker with a twist of thuggish flavor gives a joy to both Henny drinking black brothers and Grey Goose drinking white brothers alike.

  1. Antidote – Travi$ Scott

Kanye のレーベルG.O.O.D Musicと、T.I.

A newcomer from Houston, Texas, Travi$ Scott signed to Kanye West’s GOOD Music as a producer and to T.I.’s Grand Hustle as an artist at the same time. Travi$ is one of the most anticipated rapper/producer right now. This one is a little more subdued than your average Scott record, featuring melodies that sound very Kanye like. With its catchy chorus this one’s getting a lot of radio play.

  1. Right Hand – Drake

This is the one of the newest Drake/Meek Mill beef related songs and the track is so deep I can’t get this song out of my head. I hope nothing bad will happen to Meek like 50 Cent and Ja Rule’s two-year-long beef costed Ja with no record playing at clubs back then. I guess this one is softer compare to 50 vs Ja. Wishing nobody gets hurt.

Puff Daddy

Rawyals

BJ the Chicago Kid

Alicia Keys debuts “The Gospel” at Radio One’s “The Blitz” in New York City

Reported by Ken Simmons

Alicia Keys debuted a brand new song called “The Gospel” at Radio One’s “The Blitz” on August 11, 2015 at Stage 48 in New York City. Speaking to an invitation only audience of radio programmers from across the country and music industry VIPs, the 15-time Grammy Award winner said, “I’m crazy excited. It’s ridiculous… I figured I would bring my studio to y’all and we could listen to some exclusiveness.” “The Gospel” is an intense, throbbing hip-hop track addressing urban blight; a 2015 answer to Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.”

GB_AliciaKeysHere are the opening lyrics of “The Gospel”:

We all God’s children, products of the ghetto, Mama cooked the soup, Daddy did the yellin’

Uncle was a drunk cause it was a felon, and when he got pinched, he told them he wasn’t tellin’

Auntie was a cook, her husband was a crook, cause every job he had, they paid him off the books

Ghetto university, knowledge is all it took, in a tenement I was listening to the hook

After premiering her new song, Keys teased her upcoming CD. “I am bringing the flava of New York,” she said confidently. “We got somethin’ crazy cooking…I will take you to a place you understand. I can’t wait for you to hear it.” No word on when she will release “The Gospel” or her next album.

Radio One, which owns 55 urban radio stations, hosted the party as a showcase for artists to present new music. The list of stars performing included Ciara, Nelly, Janelle Monae with her acts Jidenna and Deep Cotton, Rita Ora, Tamia, and Jordin Sparks, plus Timbaland with his vocalist from Empire, V. Bozeman.

Ciara - EpicCiara’s spectacular six-song set was the highlight of the performances, and she gave a special shout out to her Epic Records family. As Epic CEO/Chairman L.A. Reid and Epic President Sylvia Rhone watched from a private booth, Ciara remembered how Reid launched her career thirteen years ago. “When I was 16 years old, I walked into L.A. Reid’s office,” she said. “Thank you for seeing my vision.”

Earlier in the evening, Robin Thicke briefly appeared to thank Radio One for supporting his career. Diddy also greeted the crowd as he celebrates the 20th anniversary of Bad Boy Entertainment. He commented, “I don’t take it for granted. To still be on this stage, it’s a blessing,” as the crowd roared, ‘Bad Boy…Bad Boy.’

Puff Daddy“What I do best is I provide a great platform for people,” Diddy continued. “I am a great ringmaster. I returned to Puff Daddy & The Family to introduce and support new up and coming artists, to celebrate positive energy and love.” As he looked back at his groundbreaking career, he said, “I remember the first time I heard my music on the radio. It changes your life.” Before introducing the video for his latest single, “Finna Get Loose” featuring Pharrell Williams, Diddy stated that now two decades later, his career has come full circle.

“I’m returning to the party vibe, where you’re not afraid to dance with your lady,” he announced. “I’m taking this movement across the country.”
