Joe Live in Harlem

Joe performed a free show at the Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem last Tuesday in association with WBLS.

Our harlem2nippon team was entering on 124th and 5th Avenue and heading straight in to the available seats. To our surprise, despite the stormy weather, a lot of people showed up  at the outdoor theater in the park with umbrellas.  I guess Joe was worth sitting on a wet bench for and some rain.

Joe is The Man….I’ve been following his career since 1993 a performer to the fullest.  Over the course of 20 year of his career he has released 11 albums.

Dressed in white summer suite and a hat fashionable Joe entered on stage and opened his show with ”Stutter,” one of his hits from his 3rd album, “My Name Is Joe,” followed by “Don’t Wanna Be A Player” later bacame a hip-hop anthem with late Big Pun featured on remix.

He performed “Ride With U,” “All That I Am,” and all songs we loved. He is very engaging and his vocals were outstanding. He really showed us what good R&B music is about.

Joe’s cover version of the signature song by Frankie Beverly and the Maze, “Before I Let Go” was truly one of the highlights of the show.

He wound up jumping off stage and spent the last half of his performance in the middle of the audience. He sang “I Wanna Know,” “All The Things”, “ What If A Woman”, “Doubleback” and encouraged us to sing along with him. You could tell, he really appreciates his fans. The show was amazing. Joe sang his heart out and was extremely personable with fans.

He is one of the few artist that is so humble – love him….

All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do)”,  ビッグ・パンをフィーチャーしたリミックスでもお馴染みの“Don’t Wanna Be A Player”, “No One Else Comes Close”などの名曲でトップ・スターの座を獲得。以来、2000年には「 My Name Is Joe」。 2001 年、「Better Days」、 2003年「 And Then…..」、 2007年「 Ain’t Nothin’ Like Me」、 2008 年、「Joe Thomas, New Man」、 2009年 「Signature 」、2011年「 The Good, the Bad, the Sexy」、 2013年「 Doubleback: Evolution of R&B」とノン・ストップで活躍しています。

Having put out more than 10 albums in 20 years, JOE has become one of R&B’s most accomplished and popular singers with seven Grammy nods along the span of his career. Singles such as “All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do),” “All That I Am,” “No One Comes Close” and “I Wanna Know” established Joe as a bona fide hit-maker who has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide. Moreover, his work with Mariah Carey (“Thank God I Found You”), Big Pun (“Still Not A Player”) and G-Unit (“Wanna Get To Know You”), shows that Joe is a much sought-after collaborator with some of music’s biggest and best artists. Joe’s most recent offering, Double Back:  Evolution of R&B, debuted as the #1 R&B album in the country on Billboard’s “R&B Albums” & #4 “Top 200” charts this past summer. With that success, Double Back has produced a top five single with its first release “I’d Rather Have A Love”.  With a new label deal in place PLAID TAKEOVER/BMG CHRYSALIS and new management, with veteran music executive Gerald “Plaid” Isaac, JOE is already gearing up for a successful 2014.  The top-selling R&B singer is currently in the studio putting together magnificent songs in preparation for his new commercial album 2014, summer release entitled “BRIDGES”. The lead single & video, “Love & Sex Pt. 2,” features the incredible and equally beautiful Kelly Rowland of X-FACTOR/Destiny’s Child fame and is currently impacting radio and TV heavily.  In support of his new release(s) JOE will be touring the US, Europe, Asia and abroad.

DJ Kool Herc

DJ Kool Herc

DJ Kool Herc is considered by many to be the “The Founder of Hip-Hop Culture.” In the early stages of Hip-Hop music, he brought his sound system to block parties in the Bronx and began playing the brief rhythmic sections of records which would become known as “breaks.” Using the two-turntable set-up of the disco DJs, Kool Herc’s style led to the use of two copies of the same record to elongate the break. This breakbeat DJing, using hard Funk, Rock, and records with Latin percussion, formed the basis of Hip-Hop music. DJ Kool Herc’s music along with his announcements to his dancers, called B-Boys and B-Girls, helped pave the way to what everyone now knows as Hip-Hop.

DJ Spinna

DJ Spinna is an extraordinary deejay, producer, re-mixer, and music historian possessing a remarkable mix of musical abilities. He went on to become a cornerstone of Hip-Hop’s golden era providing the musical canvas for lyrical giants like Eminem, Mos Def and Talib Kweli. A producer of timeless classics and collaborator with Hip-Hop legends like Brand Nubian, Masta Ace, Guru, and The Jungle Brothers, he also built a reputation as a crucial re-mixer reworking major label hits for the likes of De La Soul, Mary J. Blige, George Michael and a hard-driving soulful remix of Michael Jackson’s “We’re Almost There.” A protégé of Stevie Wonder, audiences will often find him travelling and performing with the artist.

“Hotter Than July” is a rare BBC documentary that examines Stevie Wonder’s musical insight and preparation for his 1980-1981 USA tour. Infused with personal interviews, backstage antics and an appearance at the Washington Rally to celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr and more, this film gives intimate insight into one of music’s most celebrated stars.
