アポロ劇場についで由緒あるハーレムの名所、「レノックス・ラウンジ」が閉店に追い込まれてしまうかも…..という悲しいニュースが伝わってきました。ビリー・ホリデー、ジョン・コルトレーン、マイルス・デイヴィスなどジャズの大御所たちがプレイしたバーは、現在もジャズの生演奏が楽しめるお店として親しまれています。美しいアールデコ建築でも知られていた「レノックス・ラウンジ」、エディー・マーフィーの1983年のヒット映画、「Trading Places」や、デンゼル・ワシントン主演の「American Gangster」の他、数々のロケにも使われました。
Lenox Lounge - Jazz Live Performance
1939年にオープン以来、何代かオーナーが変り、1988年より今のオーナー、アル・リードが経営しています。ところが、今年の6月でリース契約が切れてしまい、大家が家賃を10,000ドルから20,000ドル上げると通告してきたのです。「そんな高い家賃は払えない。」とリード氏。お店を手放さざるを得ない苦境に立たされています。たとえ他の人の手に渡ったとしても「レノックス・ラウンジ」の伝統はそのまま受け継いでいってほしい、そう願うリード氏にマーカス・サミュエルソン（レッド・ルースターのオーナー）や映画界のドン、ロバート・デ・ニーロなどから救いの手が…….。

「レノックス・ラウンジ」は日本人観光客の間でも人気のスポットです。私も1984年にNYに移住してから何度か行きました。ローカルの常連たちがバーにたむろしていて「いかにもハーレム」といった独特の雰囲気を醸し出しています。ただ、私たち日本人に対して、というか私だけなのかもしれませんが、バーテンやウエィトレスがわりとつっけんどんなのか気になりました。ほとんど観光客しか来ないのにその観光客を大切にしているようには思えませんでした。ミニマム2ドリンクとか、ひとり＄25とかやたらチャージが高いわりには、バーテン同士でぺちゃくちゃ喋ったりテレビを見たり、かなりムシされていましたね。たまたま私が行った時に偶然そういう従業員にあたったのか……。ま、それもハーレムの素顔なのですが…….。
まだ6月以降の運命はわかりませんが、何とかこの危機を乗り切って「レノックス・ラウンジ」の存続を願いたいものです。

Lenox Lounge, the historic Harlem jazz club, in danger of closing
All Al Reed wants is for one of Harlem’s most recognized jazz clubs to continue its legacy – even if it’s owned by a pal of actor Robert De Niro.
Reed, who has owned Lenox Lounge since 1988, will not be renewing his lease when it ends in June because he can’t afford the rent. The landlord is hiking the rent for the historic jazz institution from $10,000 per month to $20,000, he said.
“There’s no way I can do that…I’m not mad. That’s their business decision. They wanted to make some money,” he said, adding at least nine different groups have come to “look at” the 74-person capacity space on Lenox Ave. near W. 125th St.
While Reed knows he can’t afford to stay, he’s hopeful he will still have a hand in the future of Lenox Lounge if the new owner decides to continue the legacy of the jazz spot that first opened in 1939.
“I’m not selling the place; the landlord is increasing the rent, that I can’t pay,” he told the Daily News of the club that has been a stage for jazz greats ranging from Billie Holiday to Miles Davis.
“I’m sad about it, but I’m realistic. I can’t do too much about it,” he said. “I’m more concerned about Lenox Lounge existing even if it exists without me.”
Reed, a life-long Harlem resident who started out selling 15 cent copies of the Amsterdam News when he was about 8, said he’s disappointed to see so many area businesses closing up.
It’s been reported that interested buyers include restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson and a partner of Robert De Niro. But, whoever decides to take over the pricey lease will have to work with Reed, who plans to still have a hand in Lenox’s legacy. “I am Lenox Lounge, and I will be Lenox Lounge for quite some time. And if they want Lenox Lounge, they want me.”

Wホテル・チェーンの仲間、アロフト・ホテルが昨年8月に何とハーレムにオープンしました。マジック・ジョンソン劇場、アポロ劇場のすぐそば、地下鉄のA, B, C, Dトレインの１２５丁目駅からワン・ブロックという便利さです。

ハーレムとはいえ、やはりマンハッタンなのでお部屋は狭いですが新しいので快適との評判です。宿泊費ですが、マンハッタンのホテル料金の平均より少し安め、200ドル前後です。ちなみに4/30チェック・インでみてみると、部屋代は186.15ドル（税込みで217.12ドル、約￥18,700）、ずっと先の9/1だと169.15ドル（税込み197.62ドル、約￥16,990）です。日本と比べると高い感じがしますがこのお値段にしては内容も充実していて、ファンキーな気分が十分味わえるのでお薦め。とにかくスタッフが若くて元気いっぱい、とてもフレンドリーです。全室高速インターネットが無料で使えます。インテリアもカラフルで遊び心がいっぱい、若い女の子同士で泊まるには最適です。年配の方々でも場違いな感じがしないのは、スタッフや遊びにきている地元の黒人たちが暖かくおもてなしをしてくれるから。注意点は部屋によっては窓が極端に小さかったり、裏庭に面していて暗かったりする場合があること。気に入らない部屋に通されたら遠慮せずに、「ルーム・チェンジ・プリーズ」とお願いしましょう。満室でなければすぐに違うお部屋に変えてもらえます。オフ・シーズンはスペシャル価格$99で泊まれるなど、お得な情報がいっぱい。アロフト・ホテル（ハーレム）のホームページをチェックするのをお忘れなく。
Bar wxyz
泊まるのは友人宅、でもハーレム体験をしたいという人にはここのバー、wxyzがぴったり。夕方早い時間から地元のお洒落な黒人やヨーロッパからの泊り客などで賑わっています。音楽はハーレムらしくR&Bやソウルがメイン。バーテンも親切で楽しい人ばかり。ドリンクのお値段はワインが11ドル（約￥950）、カクテルが13ドル（約￥1,100）でミッドタウンのホテル（だいたい￥1,500から￥2,000くらい）よりはずっとお値打ちです。
Bar wxyz
若いお客さん中心ですが、年齢に関係なく楽しめます。ホテル・ロビーがそのままクラブになってしまったかのような華やかさ。バースデー・パーティーやローカルFM局主催のイベントがあったりと、いつも盛り上がっています。特に週末は音楽がガンガンかかるのでうるさいくらい。静かに読書をしたい人には不向きです。私が最初にハーレムを訪れた30年前はとても怪しげなエリアでしたが、最近はすっかり街の雰囲気が変ってお洒落になりました。夜、女性がひとりで歩いても安心です。とは言え、ここはニューヨーク、油断は禁物、気をつけましょう。

The hub of hip, w xyz bar is always happening. Mix, meet, and mingle over music and cocktails. The fun flows freely with everything from pints to pinot noirs to signature drinks, plus a snack attack menu, music, and can’t miss events.
If there’s a downside, the lobby gets noisy each night with music, loud younger people, etc.

The Apollo Theater will induct Lionel Richie and the late Etta James into its Apollo Legends Hall Of Fame at its seventh annual Spring Gala on Monday, June 4th. The Gala Benefit Concert and Awards Ceremony raises funds in support of the non-profit theater’s legacy, its current initiatives for artists, and community and educational programs that serve students and families in New York City and beyond.
Each Apollo Legends Hall Of Fame inductee is honored with a plaque in the Apollo Walk Of Fame, installed under the theater’s marquee on 125th Street.
“I was so moved when I found out that I would be inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall Of Fame, an honor made even more special because it is shared this year with the late Etta James.
