ケン・シモンズ、今年のグラミー受賞アーティスト予想！

21 by Adele - Album Of The Year?

2月12日、いよいよグラミー賞の受賞式が開催されます。毎年、イベントの少ない２月に行なわれる恒例のグラミー賞、ニューヨークで開催されていた時期もあるのですが、現在はずっとLAにて開催されています。気候的にも寒いニューヨークより温暖なカルフォルにアのほうが適しているという理由もありますが、どうも政治的な背景が関係しているらしく、2003年以来ずっとＮＹでの開催はありません。

「ハーレム２ニッポン」のアドバイザー、ブラック・ミュージック・ジャーナリストのケン・シモンズに今回グラミーの予想というのを語ってもらいました。カテゴリーはたくさんありますが、ここではアーバン/ブラック中心に進めていきたいと思います。

Kanye West

今回のノミネート最多獲得はカニエ・ウエストの７部門、アデールの6部門、ブルーノ・マーズ６部門、リル・ウェイン５部門。他に、ニッキー・ミナージ、シーロ・グリーンなども健闘しています。

ケンさんによると、今年はアデールとブルーノ・マーズの対決になるそうです。ケンさんは個人的にもブルーノ・マーズを応援しているのだとか…….。プロデューサーとしてもノミネートされているマーズ、その音楽性、クリエィティヴなところが魅力なのだそう。

ほかに注目する点はラップ部門のカニエ・ウエストとジェイZ。なんとカニエは「ベスト・ラップ・ソング」部門で、 All Of The Lights（Kanye West）とOtis（Jay-Z & Kanye West）2曲同時ノミネート、つまり自分自身との戦い、という不思議な対戦になってしまったのです。どうなることやら……。結果は当日のお楽しみ…..。

2012 GRAMMY PREDICTIONS

As a nationally syndicated entertainment journalist and radio producer based in New York City who has covered music for 36 years, I am anxiously awaiting the 54^th Grammy Awards this Sunday in Los Angeles. I produced the Official Grammy Awards Radio Special for Premiere Radio Networks for several years, and covering The Grammys is always one of my personal highlights every year.

One of my favorite Grammy memories was in 1998 when I was scheduled to interview Aretha Franklin during a Grammy Awards rehearsal at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The Queen of Soul is also the Queen of the Grammys with eighteen awards. Although I had met Aretha previously and will always remember taking a photo with her and my mother, she was one of the few major recording stars I had never interviewed. This was going to be one of my proudest moments, interviewing the legendary Aretha for The Grammy Awards Radio special, and I was overflowing with anticipation. When the time arrived for the interview, I looked up and saw a messenger carrying a pizza past me. I regretfully discovered that the food was destined for The Queen in her dressing room, and she had decided to use the time designated for our interview to eat. Aretha chose a pizza over being interviewed by me! I was devastated, but I overcame the disappointment and proceeded to interview several of the remaining nominees. Ironically, I just received a call from her publicist asking to recommend a choir to sing with Aretha next week at the scene of my embarrassment, Radio City Music Hall. Maybe this time she will finally grant me the interview I’ve been waiting to conduct for fourteen years!

This year The Grammys are being presented at The Staples Center in Los Angeles. Kanye West leads all artists with seven nominations. He’s been a Grammy favorite winning fourteen awards in only seven years. Adele, Bruno Mars and Foo Fighters follow him with six nominations, Lil Wayne has five, and several artists are up for four awards including Drake, Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. My crystal ball says the big winners this year will be Adele and Bruno. They are each nominated in the three biggest categories: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. Bruno Mars is also nominated for Producer of the Year. Kanye will compete against them in the Song of the Year category for “All Of The Lights” featuring Rihanna, Kid Cudi and Fergy from his CD My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Mars’ is nominated for “Grenade” and Adele was recognized for “Rolling In The Deep.” Kanye faces the obstacle that historically rap artists rarely win the big three awards. The voters from the National Academy of Recordings Arts and Sciences (NARAS) are generally older and conservative, so they tend not to choose rappers in those categories. As usual, Kanye will have the consolation of walking away with at least one award in a rap category, probably “Best Rap Song” for “All Of The Lights.”

Who will be the big winners of the night? It’s a tossup between Adele and Mars. They could tie for the most awards. But I’ll pick Mars as the star of the night. Why? I had a close encounter with him after attending the premiere of Beyonce’s “Live At Roseland” concert video last year in Manhattan. As I left the theater, Mars pulled up in a van and crossed the street right in front of me. So Sunday night a “Grenade” will explode at The Staples Center and The Grammys will be transported to Mars!

アメリカの黒人が大好きだったTV番組、「ソウル・トレイン」の司会者、ドン・コーネリウスがカルフォルニアの自宅で自殺したらしいという悲しいニュースがインターネット上を駆けめぐりました。2月1日早朝、銃で頭を撃ち抜き病院に運ばれたものの時すでに遅し、息を引き取ったとのことです。

「ソウル・トレイン」といっても実際に見たことのない人も多いと思います。まだ黒人音楽が主流でなかった1970年代に、黒人のためのテレビ番組を制作、放映してしまったという事実は当時を知るミュージシャン、ジャーナリスト、そして黒人の人たちに聞いてみて初めてそのインパクトの大きさがわかります。なにしろ、プロデューサーも黒人なら出演者も黒人、スポンサー（ジョンソンプロダクツ）も黒人なのですから……。前代未聞です。シカゴのディスク・ジョッキーだったドン・コーネリウスが成し遂げた功績は計り知れないほど大きいのです。

最近のラッパ−やR＆Bアーティストでも「ソウル・トレイン」は再放送などで必ず見ています。今でも続いている「ソウル・トレイン・アワード」を受賞することはグラミー賞受賞に匹敵する、もしくはそれ以上に栄誉あることなのだそうです。M.C.ハマーも、「グラミーをもらうよりソウル・トレインに出演することのほうがよっぽど嬉しかった。ドン、ありがとう。やすらかに。」とツウィートしているくらいです。

日本でもドン・コーネリウスの影響は多大でした。J-WAVEで「ソウル・トレイン」という人気番組のホストだったDJリュウも影響を受けたひとりです。番組を通してドンと何度も会う機会があったDJリュウからも、「一緒に仕事ができてとても光栄です。番組がスタート以来、沢山笑い、たくさん言い合いもしました。伝説がまた一人天国へ。MJ　JBらと再会ですね。本当に残念です。」というメッセージが届きました。

‘Soul Train’s’ Don Cornelius Found Dead

Don Cornelius was a pioneer. The “Soul Train” creator, who was found dead at his home in Encino, California Wednesday morning, caused a sensation the moment his groundbreaking musical variety show launched nationwide in 1971.

The early evidence suggests he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, although authorities stress that the death remains under investigation.

Each Saturday morning, “Soul Train” gave African Americans an opportunity to see themselves reflected on their TV screens. Proud black teens and young adults moving and grooving down the now-classic “Soul Train Line” instantly dictated hairstyles, dance moves and wardrobe choices in the weeks to come. He not only broke artists and songs on a weekly basis, but showcased the amazing dance moves that were reacting to the music.

Cornelius stopped hosting the show in 1993, and “Soul Train” ceased production in 2006.

DJ Ryu, who hosted “Soul Train Radio Show” on Japanese FM station, J-Wave, sent a message through his facebook, “Don Cornelius, R.I.P. I am greatly honored to be a part of your legend. You were so great to me.”

“It meant more to me to perform on #SoulTrain than to win a Grammy…Loved U So Much Don.Thank U RIP,” tweeted MC Hammer.

踊るダグラス旅行会社……….？変った名前の旅行社を紹介しましょう。　ハーレムは155丁目出身、ちょっとやんちゃな黒人少年ダグラス・コロンは80年代に一世を風靡した新しいカルチャー、ヒップホップにどっぷり浸かり、ブレイク・ダンスにはまってしまいました。当時頭角を現して来た地元のダンス・チーム、「Bボーイ・ブレイク・ダンサーズ」の一員として活躍、その時についたニック・ネームがダンシン・ダグでした。

その後、ハーレムで暴れすぎてトラブルに巻き込まれ窮地に陥ったことも…….。こんなことじゃいけない、「心を入れ替えて正しい人生を歩もう！」そう決心してダグラスはロング・アイランドにある大学に入学、犯罪学を専攻し、卒業後はFBI エージェントとして命を張って社会に貢献する道を選んだのでした。

え？それとこの踊るダグラス旅行会社と何の関係があるの……..。おおありなのです。FBI エージェントという仕事は容疑者を追い掛けて全米をかけめぐるらしいのです。ダグもその例に洩れず、あちこち出張させられました。旅行が大好きなダグ、バケーションもちゃんととります。それも、年に4回も……..。アメリカ国内はもちろん、カリブの島々、そしてアフリカなど各国をまわっているうちにすっかり旅のエキスパートになっていました。セント・ルシアのビーチに寝そべって空を見ている時にふと浮かびました。「仕事の合間にバケーションするんじゃなくて、バケーションを仕事にしてしまったほうがいいのでは…….。」

FBI のほうは早期引退ということで辞表を提出、さっそく資格を取り旅行業に専念することを決め、2007年の8月、自分の会社、ダンシン・ダグ・トラベル・エージェンシー(DDT)を立ち上げました。持ち前の明るい性格と面倒見のよさでパーティー中心のツアーを企画して大当たり、DDTは昨年2011年までに会員数1,400を誇るジャンボ・ファミリーへと成長しました。エレガントな仮装マスカレード、「パイレーツ・オブ・ザ・カリビアン」といった楽しいテーマのパーティーを催し、参加者はみんなお友達になってしまうそう。アフリカン・アメリカンの仲間たちが作るDDTの旅は音楽いっぱい、ファンキーな体験ができると大好評です。

Dancin Doug Travel Agency – It’s a Love Thang!!

Colon), one of the Original “B-Boy” Break Dancers from the start of Hip Hop and the Kool Herc Dancin’ Doug Travel (DDT) was founded in November of 2006 by “Dancin’ Doug” (Douglas era of Harlem and the Bronx.

Douglas eventually became a Law Enforcement Executive (Special Agent-in-Charge for the Office of Labor Racketeering) with the U.S. Federal Government. He traveled often for work (some say too often) but still managed to take four vacations a year. One day while laying on a beach in St. Lucia, he decided that he would stop working to take vacations and would instead make his vacations work for him.

He initially joined the Your Travel Business Travel Network and became a Referring Travel Agent (RTA). After working hard booking hotel, car and airline reservations plus all inclusive travel vacations for friends and family, and not seeing much profit, he left them in August of 2007, incorporated Dancin’ Doug Travel Agency and became an Independent affiliated Host Travel Agency for Nexion Travel of Southlake Texas.

To date, Dancin Doug Travel has grown from a travel group of 70 members in 2007 to a Full Service Travel Agency of over 50 trained Travel Agents and a Travel Family of over 1,400 members in 2011. The sky is truly the limit!

エタ・ジェームズ　リズム＆ブルースの終焉 Etta “Peaches” James – The Death of Rhythm & Blues

リズム＆ブルースの女王、エタ・ジェームスが亡くなりました。73歳でした。死因はルーキミア（白血病）だったそうです。彼女の初期のヒット曲、 All I could do was cry……….、そんな心境です。

悲しいブルースを歌わせたら天下一品、ビヨンセ主演の伝記映画、「キャデラック・レコーズ」でも登場するエタの歌う「I’d Rather Go Blind」は本当に切ない、失恋のブルースです。恋人に捨てられた女………、「新しい彼女をみつけた彼が私から去ってゆく姿を見るくらいなら、いっそのこと盲目になってしまいたい……。」エタ・ジェームスの魂の叫びがきこえます。それにしてもこの歌詞、エタ自身が書いたと主張しているらしいのですが女が書いたとはとても思えないのです。女の心理ならば、「他の女を見ないように、いっそのことあなたが盲目になってしまえばいいのに………」となるはず……..。

エタ・ジェームス（本名Jamesetta Hawkins）は、白人の父親と黒人の母親とのあいだにカルフォルニアで生まれました。肌の色が黒人にしてはうすいことからピーチーズというニック・ネームで呼ばれることも多かったようです。一時は「ピーチーズ」というガール・グループで歌っていたこともあります。カルフォルニア出身ですが、ひょんなことからシカゴにたどりつき、ムーングロウズという地元のドゥワップ・グループのリーダー格のハーヴィー・フークァと運命の出会いをします。このグループにはのちに悲劇の死を遂げるあのマーヴィン・ゲイが在籍していました。

17歳の多感な少女だったピーチーズがチェス・レコーズの敏腕A&Rだったオトナの男、ハーヴィーと恋に落ちるのにそれほど時間はかかりませんでした。当時チェスはポップな乗りのリズム＆ブルースが歌えるアイドルを探していました。ライト・スキンでまだあどけないエタ・ピーチーズ・ジェームスはまさにぴったりのスター候補だったのです。本気で愛を捧げたピーチーズでしたが、ハーヴィーにとってはただの在籍アーティストとの火遊びにすぎませんでした。ハーヴィーはやがてデトロイトでチェス・レコーズに対抗して台頭するモータウン・レコーズの創始者、ベリー・ゴーディーの姉、グエン・ゴーディーと結婚してしまいます。その時の彼女のホンネが1962年にリリースされた「Stop The Wedding」だと言われています。

チェス時代に「At Last」,「All I Could Do Was Cry」,「Dance With Me Henry」,「Tell Mama」など数々のヒットを放ちましたがヘロインやコカインなどの薬物常習するようになり、エタは波瀾万丈の人生を送ることになります。

80年代、エタ・ジェームスはニューヨークで頻繁にライヴ活動をしていたことがあります。その頃に彼女のショーを見にいったことがあります。まさにブルースの女王です。彼女の語りが感情を帯びて叫びに変ってゆきます。魂の叫びが聞こえてきます。まだ彼女がとても太っている時期で、汗びっしょり、途中で靴を脱いで裸足になって歌っていました。外見なんか気にしない．……、歌はソウル、心意気なのです。Etta James =リズム＆ブルース、非常に感動したのを覚えています。

本当かどうか定かではありませんが、彼女の代表曲ともいえる「アット・ラスト」はレコード会社の意向で歌わせられた曲で本人は実は好きでない、という話を聞いたことがあります。確かにわりとジャジーでポップなバラードでエタのスタイルとは合わないように思います。ビヨンセがオバマ大統領就任式の時にホワイト・ハウスに招かれ、エタ・ジェームスの持ち歌「At Last」を歌ったことはよく知られています。それほど好きでない曲かもしれませんが、エタにとっては他人に「さらわれた」も同然、とても気分を害したことと思います。ビヨンセとエタ・ジェームスの確執！と取り沙汰されましたが、あとでエタが「気にしていない」と声明を発表し大事には至らなかった様子。

ここ数年はずっと病気だったらしいのですが最近白血病を併発し、とうとう73歳で亡くなってしまいました。とても残念です。R.I.P

At Last by Etta James

Etta James, 73, died, Friday.

Ms. James suffered complications from leukemia had been beset with a variety of health problems.

Born Jamesetta Hawkins, January 25, 1938, Los Angeles, California, Etta James is the bold soul queen of the ‘60s who dared to dye her bouffant hair blonde and prance on stage singing from the deepest, darkest, and the most joyful parts of her life.

Originally discovered by West Coast R&B bandleader Johnny Otis, Etta’s first record, “The Wallflower (Dance With Me Henry),” on the Modern label, went right to the number two position on the charts when she was just 17 years old. But the biggest part of Etta James’ career lay ahead of her at Chicago’s premier R&B label, Chess Records, for which she would record from 1960 until the mid-‘70s. It was at Chess that the budding artist would blossom into the exciting vocalist who still thrills audiences around the world today.

Soon after arriving in Chicago with little money, she signed with Chess Records, where her heartthrob Harvey Fuqua was an A&R man. At that time, Chess was looking for an artist who could take the R&B sound into the pop arena, and Etta fit the bill. The sepia-skinned, peroxide blonde was maturing, and her little girl voice could drop from a screaming soprano to a melancholy alto on sweet and beautiful ballads.

She quickly gained fame with hits such as “Dance With Me, Henry”, “At Last”, “Tell Mama” and “I’d Rather Go Blind” for which she claimed she wrote the lyrics. She thought she was romantically involved with Fuqua, but he didn’t feel that way about her.

Between recording gigs at Chess, Etta and groups like The Moonglows toured through the South and East, playing chitlin circuit. As her star was rising, Etta became a vital part of the musical movement. But living the fast-paced life didn’t give an artist like Etta time to sit back and rejoice at the impact R&B was having on society. It was lonely and hard for a young woman on the road, and her love for Fuqua went unrequited. Soon she was using heroin to ease the pain, and like so many other talented musicians, Etta became a drug addict by the time she was 21.

Eventually Fuqua went on to Detroit to help Motown Records get off the ground and married Gwen Gordy, the elder sister of the Detroit label’s founder, Berry Gordy. Etta remained in Chicago cranking out hits like “Stop The Wedding,” a song that cried out her feeling about Fuqua’s marriage.

I saw Etta James live in New York in ‘80s. Everything she sings, you believe her, even if she never wrote a word of it herself. She shouts out many of the soul songs then she’ll croon a bluesy ballad like a woman who’s been there and survived.

Ms. James is survived by her husband of 42 years, Artis Mills, and sons Donto and Sametto James.
