今年2014年は、ヒップホップ・ファンなら誰もが大好きなラッパー、ナズのデビュー・アルバム「イルマティック」がリリースされて20周年。それにまつわる様々なイベントが開催されますのでご紹介します。

Nas Documentary Film “Time Is Illmatic”
すでにお伝えしたとおり、トライベッカ映画祭のオープニング・フィルムとして公開されたドキュメンタリー映画、「Time Is Illmatic」、一般公開間近。脚本、プロデュースは元Vibe音楽エディターのエリック・パーカー。

Nasのドキュメンタリー映画を作ろうと思ったきっかけは、ヴァイブ・マガジン用のナズ特集記事の取材だったといいます。

2004年、ナズの大傑作と称賛されているデビュー・アルバム、Illmaticの10周年を記念して大特集を組むことになり、「ナズを語るうえでミシシッピー出身の父親、ジャズ・ミュージシャンのオル・ダラのストーリーは不可欠。ジャズからヒップホップへの音楽の変遷、親子二代の物語を伝えなければ意味がない。限られた雑誌の誌面では不可能」と、ドキュメンタリー制作を思いついたのだそう。当初はアルバムIllmaticがいかに作られたか、というビハインド・ザ・シーン的な作品を予定していたそうですが、当時のヒップホップの象徴、ストリートの生の姿を伝えようとエスカレートし、「Time Is Illmatic」というドキュメンタリー映画が出来上がりました。

10年の歳月を費やして完成した、「Time Is Illmatic」にはナズの育ったクィーンズ・ブリッジのプロジェクトはもちろん、父オル・ダラの故郷、ミシシッピーのナッチェスも登場します。ドラッグ問題、教育の現状、貧しいプロジェクトの生活など、ヒップホップ世代の現実が浮き彫りにされています。Illmatic に収録されている’One Love’のプロデューサーとしても知られるQティップや、ナズの弟のジャングルなども参加しています。

日本でも公開されると嬉しいですね。公開日程など詳細は追ってレポートいたします。

Illmatic XX リリース
ヒップホップのバイブル的存在の雑誌、「ザ・ソース」で5本マイクを獲得したアルバム、「イルマティック」のリイシュー・アルバム「IllmaticXX」が4/15発売されました。収録曲は同じ10曲、オリジナル・バージョンとリミックス・バージョン、さらに、未発表曲’I’m A Villain’を加えてのダブル・アルバム。以下、トラック・リストをご参照ください。アルバム・プロモートのイベントやツアー等いろいろ企画されていますので、こちらもあわせてレポートしたいと思います。すでにテレビ番組などでもナズをはじめ、オールド・スクール・ヒップホップ・アーティストがフィーチャーされて再認識されています。この夏はヒップホップ黄金期のアーティストのライヴで盛り上がりそうな気配……。

Nas’ Debut Album “Illmatic” Celebrates its 20th Anniversary

Documentary Film “Time Is Illmatic”
Time is Illmatic tells the story of Nas’s journey to becoming a legendary MC, but also the conditions, realities, and cultures that shaped his debut.

Nas’s dad, Olu Dara is from Natchez, Mississippi, and is a jazz and blues musician. Nas is from Queensbridge and a rap artist. These two generations, they cover the Black northern migration, hip hop as a popular music for young black men, people living in projects, drugs because crack had come on to the scene, the education system and its failures–the different obstacles that young boys who want to become men have to face. This is what shaped Illmatic.

Though Time is Illmatic delves into the making of Nas’ 1994 groundbreaking album, most of the documentary traces experiences outside of the studio that affected the music being made within it. The film talks about social conditions and environmental influences that fueled its creation, like public school education, project housing, the crack epidemic of the 1980s, and the subsequent “War on Drugs.” Interviews with Nas’ Blues musician father, Olu Dara, his brother Jabari (Jungle), and emcee/producer Q-Tip gives fans a look at what fueled the intricate wordsmith to continuously innovate and bring the story of Queensbridge to the world’s stage.

Illmatic XX
Nas announces the impending release of Illmatic XX – the 20th anniversary edition of his seminal Illmatic LP. The two-disc project will feature completely remastered tracks along with rare remixes, unreleased demos and freestyles. Nas will tour in support of the release and plans to perform his debut LP in its entirety to celebrate the project’s anniversary.
