‘American Soul’: BET Drama

70年代の人気番組、「ソウル・トレイン」をドラマ化した、BET (Black Entertainment Television) 制作のテレビ番組、「アメリカン・ソウル」がいよいよ2月5日から放映されます。

BETの発表によると、この「ソウル・トレイン物語」は史実とフィクションを交えた、知られざるソウル・トレインのエピソードを満載している、とか……。まだ、黒人のための娯楽番組がなかった70年代初期、ドン・コーネリアスがシカゴで始めた、ソウル・ミュージックとダンスをフィーチャーしたテレビ番組、「Soul Train」は、その放映が始まると、瞬く間に全米に広がり、黒人たちだけでなく、白人のトレンディ―な若者たちを魅了し、さらに世界的な現象となってしまったのは周知の事実です。

司会者、ドン・コーネリアスやプロデューサー、ミュージシャンたちの裏話も気になりますが、何と言っても、今のアーティストたちによる音楽パフォーマンスが話題になっています。

グラディス・ナイトを演じるのは元デスティニー・チャイルドのケリー・ローランド。グラディスのようなハスキーな声で歌うため、さまざまな努力をしたそうです。「ウィスキーをガブ飲みして声をつぶしたらどうか、とトライしたけど、全く効果がなかった。」と告白しています。そんなケリーの歌うグラディスのヒット曲、「Midnight Train to Georgia」は聴きものです。

他にも、モータウン・レコードの花形歌姫、ダイアナ・ロスを、元デスチャのミシェール・ウィリアムスが演じたり、K. ミシェールが、同じくモータウンのガール・グループ、Martha and the Vandellasのリード・ヴォーカル、マーサ・リーヴスの歌をカバーしたり、70年代ソウル・ミュージックを再現した、楽しいエンターティンメント番組に仕上がっているようです。

Whitney Biopic Directed by Angela Bassett on Lifetime Tonight

Angela Bassett has taken a brief pause in her acting career steps behind the camera to direct biopic ‘Whitney’ a movie that airs Saturday (Jan. 17) at 8 p.m. on Lifetime.

Cissy Houston, Whitney’s mother publicly spoke out the film was being made against the family’s objections. “No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby,” she said. “We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please please let her rest.”

“We all know how it ends,” Bassett says. “And we all make mistakes. Most of us get to make them in private. Whitney and Bobby had to make them in public.”

“We’re looking at a five-year moment in time,” Bassett says — the late ’80s and early ’90s, before things spun way out of control.

Houston and Brown finally divorced in 2006 and Houston died Feb. 11, 2012, at the age of 48.

Even as Houston was achieving professional success no one can imagine, even when the country saw her as America’s Sweetheart, a golden voice inside a calm, beautiful, poised and elegant woman, there was trouble in paradise.

There were drugs. Lots of drugs, Houston later admitted. In the film, she’s having fun with cocaine back when Bobby was still saying no.

Their relationship eventually slid into mistrust and physical abuse, on both sides. Houston’s short run on Bobby’s reality TV show at times portrayed her as snappish and impatient, with a mouth like a sailor.

It was those small personal moments — some surprising and many charming — with which Bassett says she tried to fill out the picture.

“Whitney” isn’t based on any one source, and it wasn’t made with the cooperation of any key people in Houston’s life. Nor does it use Houston’s own voice, though it features four of her songs: “The Greatest Love of All,” “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” “I’m Every Woman” and “I Will Always Love You.”

While Houston is played by Yaya DaCosta, the songs are sung by Deborah Cox. Cox also sings bits of a few other songs, mostly gospel.

Bassett says her goal with the movie was to “play it down the middle, just try to tell the story as factually as we could.”

Bassett says she also drew extensively on the autobiography of Clive Davis, the music mogul who signed Houston and set much of her musical direction.

Bassett is well known herself for playing Tina Turner, another internationally famous singer who had serious issues in her marriage.

“What you need to remember about Whitney is that no one had the success she did. We make that point right at the beginning. In four years she had seven straight No. 1 hits and sold 30 million albums. That’s more than the Beatles or the Rolling Stones. In four years. And she was 23 years old. How do you deal with that? How does anyone deal with that?

“I hope we’ve shown that we need to have compassion for the journey she and Bobby were on — and the choices they made.”

クライヴ・ディヴィス主催の恒例、グラミー前夜祭パーティーに出席する予定だったホィットニー・ヒューストンが急死、まだ原因はわかっていないそうです。

マイケル・ジャクソンに次ぐ音楽界のビッグ・スター、ホィットニー逝去のニュースはグラミー・アワード前日のハリウッドに集まっていたセレブたちの間で瞬く間に広がりました。彼女の死が確認されたロスアンジェルス・タイムの2月11日、3：55pmの2時間後には現場のビバリー・ホテルよりテレビの生中継でニュースは全米に伝わり、ホィットニーに関するツィーターが飛び交い一時は混乱状態におちいったとか…….。

いつもはとっさの対応が苦手なブラックTV局のBET でもニュース速報を流し、翌日の12日、日曜日の午前中には「ホィットニー・ヒューストン追悼特別番組」を放映しました。プログラム・ディレクターのスティーヴン・ヒルが前夜11時にスタッフを招集、異例のミーティングを行い、このスペシャル番組を企画、たった一晩で脚本を書き上げ生中継をするという離れ業をやってのけたのです。司会は人気ヒップホップ番組「106＆パーク」のテレンスとBET所属ナイジェリア生まれのジャーナリスト、ローラ・オグンナイケ。いつもはおふざけホストのテレンスもビッグ・スター、ホィットニーの追悼番組とあって緊張気味、いつものコンビ、ロクシーがグラミー関係の取材でLA滞在中のため、急遽ローラが相手役というちょっとぎこちないカップリングでしたがきちんとお務めを果たしました。ローラは元CNNのポップ・カルチャー・キャスター、大統領夫人のミシェール・オバマとレポーターとしてアフリカ取材旅行に同行した経験を持つベテランです。

番組は、ホィットニーのデビューから現在までのヒット曲をミュージック・ビデオとさまざまなエピソードで綴り、スター、Whitney Houston の業績を讃えるという内容です。懐かしいヒット曲が次から次へと流れます。覚えていますか、彼女の初期のヒット曲、「Greatest Love Of All」。撮影場所はハーレムにある音楽の殿堂、アポロ劇場です。ビデオを見るととても大きな劇場に見えますが、収容人数は1、500人、実はわりと小さいんです。彼女のキャリアのハイライトともいえる1991年スーパー・ボールの国歌斉唱、声高々と歌う若いホィットニーの姿に感動したのは黒人のファンたちだけではありません。アメリカ国歌「The Star Spangled Banner」は過去にもいろいろなアーティストが歌っていますが、ホィットニーのヴァージョンがあまりに素晴らしいのでシングル・カットされ、チャート入りするという快挙を成し遂げました。

翌年、1992年には映画、「ボディガード」に主演、410ミリオン・ドルという驚異的な売り上げを記録しました。もちろん、サントラ「ボディガード」も映画同様に大成功、シングル、”I Will Always Love You” は400万枚というメガ・ヒットを飛ばしました。

予算に厳しいBET 制作にしては珍しく、ホィットニーが育ったニュージャージーのニューアークにある教会、The New Hope Baptist Church にもキャスターを配置し、彼女のクワィアー時代のストーリーもカバーするというオマケつき。

番組中、彼女と親しかったマライア・キャリー、アレサ・フランクリン、クリティーナ・アギレラといったセレブからツィッターでメッセージが続々と届き、テレビの画面に映し出されました。

ポジティヴなイメージを大切にする BET、ホィットニーのドラッグ問題にはいっさい触れませんでした。

ホィットニーの生のステージを見た人はみんな同様に、「あんなに細い体のどこからあんなソウルフルな声がでるのだろうか。」と驚いたはず。それがドラッグと関係があるとは思えませんが……..。

90年代半ば、「ホィットニー・ヒューストン、マリファナ、コカインを常用、もう再起不能」という噂が流れた時、まさか…….といやな予感がしたのを覚えています。何年か前、「106＆パーク」に出演した時も履いていたブーツを突然脱いで裸足になってしまったり、じっと座っているだけなのに異常に汗をかいたり、インタビューにもとんちんかんな答えをしたり、彼女の奇行は誰もが気がついていたと思います。

確か1998年だったと思いますが、クライヴ・ディヴィス主催のホィットニーの新しいアルバム（多分、My Love Is Your Love）の記者会見というのに出席したことがあります。テレビ中継が入っていて、ニュースとして生中継するということでした。生なのに肝心の本人は現れません。2時間以上も押してやっと会場のソニー・スタジオに来たらしいのですが、私は他のラッパーの取材予定が入っていたため途中で断念してしまったのです。ホィットニーを優先させるべきだったと今でも悔やんでいます……..。

3年くらい前だったか、ホィットニーの家に出入りしていたアシスタントとかいう人が盗み撮りした彼女の部屋のバス・ルームの写真がニューヨークのローカル紙に掲載されたことがあります。クラックを料理（調合）した形跡がはっきりと写っていました。ま、それがホィットニー・ヒューストンの家だと断定できる証拠は何もないのですが……。

新しい映画、「スパークル」にホィットニー・ヒューストンが出演しているというニュースが届いたばかり、彼女のグラミー前夜の謎の死はわたしたちファンにとって本当に予期しなかった悲しい出来事です。

離婚した夫のボビー・ブラウンもツアー先のコンサート会場のファンたちに「アイ・ラヴ・ユー、ホィットニー！」という別れの挨拶をして涙ぐんだそう。残された娘のボビ、そして母親のシシー・ヒューストン、ご家族のみなさまに心からお悔やみを申し上げます。

Whitney Houston, a guest in the room of Beverly Hilton Hotel had died.

Cause of death: Unclear.

Time pronounced: 3:55 p.m., February 11, 2012.

Age: A mere 48.

The shock and grief from fans worldwide was immediate.

Inside the hotel, music industry’s biggest names gathered in elegant attire for an annual pre-Grammy party that had been long planned by Houston’s mentor, Clive Davis.

“I do have a heavy heart, and I am personally devastated by someone so close to me for so many years,” Davis told the gathering of artists and entertainers, that included Tony Bennett, Gladys Knight and Britney Spears.

“My heart goes out to her daughter Bobbi Kristina and her mother, Cissy.”

He then asked for a moment of silence.

“We dedicate this evening to her,” he said.

For a decade and a half, she ruled the charts: 170 million albums sold, including seven back-to-back multi-platinum ones. Numerous No. 1 hits, including the biggest-selling U.S. single of all time, “I Will Always Love You.”

Houston was born in Newark, New Jersey, on August 9, 1963, the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston. Her cousin was Dionne Warwick, her godmother Aretha Franklin.

In 1983, Gerry Griffith, an A&R representative from Arista Records saw her performing with her mother in a New York City nightclub and was impressed. He convinced Arista’s head Clive Davis to make time to see Houston perform. Davis too was impressed and offered a worldwide recording contract which Houston signed. Houston’s debut album Whitney Houston was released in February 1985.

For the next quarter century, he steered her career and served as her mentor.

Her string of Billboard No. 1 hits included “Saving All My Love for You,” “How Will I Know,” “The Greatest Love of All,” “Where Do Broken Hearts Go,” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

Houston performed “The Star Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XXV on January 27, 1991. Due to overwhelming response to her rendition, it was released as a commercial single and video of her performance, and reached the Top 20 on the US Hot 100, making her the only act to turn the national anthem into a pop hit of that magnitude.

Houston’s first film role was in The Bodyguard, released in 1992 and co-starring Kevin Costner. It was hugely successful at the box office, grossing more than $121 million in the U.S. and $410 million worldwide, making it one of the top 100 grossing films in film history at its time of release. The film’s soundtrack also enjoyed big success.

On Sunday, starting at 11:30 a.m., BET will aired coverage, titled BET TRIBUTE TO WHITNEY HOUSTON, on the passing of the singer, who died at 48, followed by an encore presentation of BET HONORS 2010—where she was honored for her extraordinary achievements in the field of entertainment.

On Monday, February 13 at 6:00 p.m.*, 106 & PARK will pay tribute to the singer’s life and legacy with a 3-hour special episode
