R&Bシンガー、Ben E. Kingが4月30日、ニュージャージー州で亡くなりました。76歳でした。直接の死因は公表されていませんが、近年はずっと病気がちだったといいます。

50年代よりドゥワップ・グループ、「ザ・ドリフターズ」のメンバーとして活躍、その後ソロになってからも数々のヒット曲、「スパニッシュ・ハーレム」「スタンド・バイ・ミー」などを残し、何度も来日公演を行っています。

私がニューヨークに移り住んだ1984年以来、何度もベン・E・キングのライヴを観ました。

Soul singer Ben E. King, whose classic hit “Stand By Me” became an enduring affirmation of love and devotion for generations of listeners, has died. He was 76.

Born Benjamin Earl Nelson in North Carolina, King moved to New York as a boy and first found success as an early member of the Drifters, the doo-wop group famous for such hits as “There Goes My Baby” and “Save the Last Dance for Me.”

ジョージ・クリントン率いる怒涛のP－ファンク軍団が２年ぶりにビルボードライブのステージに登場します。今回は、新しいアルバム、”First You Gatta shake the Gate” のプロモートを兼ねての来日です。自分の息子のトレイシーや、孫娘のラションダなど、家族を巻き込んで完成させたアルバムには長年のコラボレーター、スライ・ストーンも参加しています。パーラメント、ファンカデリックにかかわったミュージシャンを全面的にフィーチャーしたこのアルバム、Pファンク名義ではなんと、33年ぶりのアルバムなのだそう。派手なパフォーマンスで有名なPファンク軍団、総勢17名でニッポンに乗り込むとか……。なんとも楽しみですね。

P-Funk is baaaaack!!!! After a long time without making new music of their own, George Clinton andf Paliament / Funkadelic has dropped a new album “First You Gotta Shake the Gate”, three-disc set last year.
