March 17 was St. Patrick Day and Clinton Sparks produced this special song, “Boston Bass” to celebrate the heritage and culture of the Irish. Clinton is from Boston, the city with large numbers of Irish immigrants. I played this song at the party in Atlantic City over the weekend and everybody loved it!!

Detroit ’67 新しいオフ・ブロードウェイ・ショー開幕！

春になるとNYの街が生き生きとしてきます。現在、イースト・ビレッジの「パブリック・シアター」で上演中のオフ・ブロードウェイ・ショー、「デトロイト‘67」が3月23日よりハーレムのナショナル・ブラック・シアテーにて開幕、4月14日まで公演します。

このプレイは1967年のモータウン音楽全盛期のデトロイトが舞台です。今週よりモータウン・レコード創始者、ベリー・ゴーディーの成功物語をミュージカル仕立てにした「モータウン、ザ・ミュージカル」が始まりましたが、NYではなぜかモータウンが盛り上がっているようです。

脚本は NAACPイメージ・アワードを受賞しているドミニーク・モリソーの女史、監督はクワァメィ・クウェイ・アーマ、出演している役者のみなさんもブロードウェイの世界ではベテランの実力派ばかりだそうです。ただ、ふだんお芝居を見ない人たちにはあまり馴染みのない俳優さんかもしれません。

主人公は黒人女性のシェリーと弟のランクで、親が亡くなったため小さな頃より住み慣れた家を遺産としてもらい、生活費の足しにするため、地下をバーにして小銭を稼いでいました。ひょんなことことから白人女性を助け、一緒に生活することに…….。おりしも世の中は楽しいモータウン・パーティー時代からブラック・パワー、ベトナム戦争、公民権運動など暴力的になってゆきます。

67年はデトロイトで暴動が起きた年です。物語はモータウンのポップ音楽をBGMに始まりますが、だんだん背景がブラック・パンサー、マルコムXなどラディカルになっていく様子を追っていきます。

ちょっとヘヴィーな内容ですが、このチャンスにブラック・シアターを体験してみてはいかがでしょうか。

Detroit ’67 Head to Harlem

The much buzzed-about play “Detroit ‘67” by two-time NAACP Image Award recipient, Dominique Morisseau will open at the National Black Theatre on Saturday, March 23.

“Detroit ’67,” which was developed through the Public Theatre’s Emerging Writers Group, a co-production with the Classical Theatre of Harlem and the National Black Theatre, will play the Public through March 17, prior to transferring to the CTH March 23 – April 14.

Set in 1967 in Detroit, where Motown music is getting the party started, the play follows Chelle and her brother Lank, who are making ends meet by turning their basement into an after-hours joint. Always at odds, they fight over the future of the family trade. But when a mysterious white woman finds her way into their care and string of raids increases police brutality around the city, the siblings become divided over much more than business. Suddenly, they find themselves caught in the middle of the ’67 riots.

こちらでは10代の女の子たちでも知っているオールド・スクール・ヒップホップ。新しいヒップホップやR＆Bをかける時のスパイス的に使うのですが、新しい曲より異常にウケてしまうのが凄い….！
