ジョージ・クリントン率いる怒涛のP－ファンク軍団が２年ぶりにビルボードライブのステージに登場します。今回は、新しいアルバム、”First You Gatta shake the Gate” のプロモートを兼ねての来日です。自分の息子のトレイシーや、孫娘のラションダなど、家族を巻き込んで完成させたアルバムには長年のコラボレーター、スライ・ストーンも参加しています。パーラメント、ファンカデリックにかかわったミュージシャンを全面的にフィーチャーしたこのアルバム、Pファンク名義ではなんと、33年ぶりのアルバムなのだそう。派手なパフォーマンスで有名なPファンク軍団、総勢17名でニッポンに乗り込むとか……。なんとも楽しみですね。
もともと、Pファンクという音楽のジャンルを作ってしまったのは、総帥ジョージ・クリントンの思いつきによるもので、モータウンのポップ路線やジェームス・ブラウンのファンキー・ソウルとの区別化を図る目的だったといいます。今やファンクといえばPファンク、ジョージ・クリントン、ブーツィー・コリンズ、メィシオ・パーカー等の名前が浮かびます。
昨年末に出版されたジョージ・クリントンの自叙伝、「Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard on You」という本に詳しく書かれていますが、実はPファンクの草分け、クリントンおじさんは50年代後半、ドゥーワップのグループで歌っていたという意外な経歴を持っています。本のプロモーションの一環でルーツのドラマー、クエスト・ラブとイベントに出席した際、Quest Loveのお父さん、リー・アンドリュース＆ザ・ハーツ全盛だった頃の思い出話に花が咲いたりと、異常に盛り上がってしまったり……。
最近でもケンドリック・ラマーと一緒に仕事をしたり、いつまでもファンキーなジョージ・クリントン、「9歳の子供が反応する音楽はぜったいに流行る」というのが口癖です。「音楽にはベテランも若手も関係ない、グルーヴがなくなったらオシマイなんだ」、たしかに………。外見は老けても「老いない」不思議なオジサン、ジョージ・クリントンのライヴは必見。ぜひこの機会に本物のPファンクを体験しましょう。
