シカゴ出身のラッパー、コモンがインディー映画のプロデュースに挑戦。自ら主役を演じた作品、「ラヴ」がサンダンス・フィルム・フェスティヴァルで大絶賛されました。キャストは他にダニー・グロヴァー、チャールズ・ダットン、ミーガン・グッド、新人、マイケル・レイニー・ジュニア。コモンの演技が素晴らしいと評判になっています。

ストーリーは11歳の少年ウッディーを取り巻くバルチモアのゲトー・ライフを中心に展開します。おばあちゃんに育てられたウッディーは母親との再会を夢見ていますが、どうもドラッグのリハビリ中らしい母には会えそうもありません。ゲトーにありがちな父親不在の少年にとって、8年のお務めをおえて刑務所からでてきた叔父のヴィンセント（コモン）はとても「クール」に映ります。ヴィンセントはそんなウッディーの心理を見透かしてか、「今日はオレがサヴァイヴァルについて教えてやる。」と少年に学校を休ませ「ストリート教育」を叩き込むことにしました。

バルチモアといえばケーブルTV、HBO の人気番組“Wire”の舞台になっている街です。ドラッグがらみの犯罪が多いことで有名になってしまった街ですが、コモンの「Luv」は「Wire」とは違って、ギャングスターたちの人間としての素顔を浮き彫りにしていきます。ヴィンセントは出所を機にギャングの世界から足を洗って「かたぎ」の仕事をしようと決心します。バルチモアは蟹の産地です。そこで蟹をメインにしたレストランをオープンしようとしますが、資金繰りに行き詰まり、訣別したはずのドラッグ・ディールに逆戻りせざるを得なくなります。24時間のあいだにウッディーは叔父とギャングとの銃撃戦を目撃、血みどろのゲトーの現実を目の当たりにします………。

元犯罪者が社会復帰をして人間らしく生きることはできるのだろうか…….。

コモンが脚本を読んでとても感動したという作品、「Luv」は単なるギャング映画と違って生活感がある人間ドラマに仕上がっています。2月7日までハーレムのミスト・シネマにて上映中です。

“Luv” is the independent film produced by Common, which also stars Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton, and Meagan Good.

”Luv” follows a day in the life of William “Woody” Watson (played by Michael Rainey Jr.), a shy and somewhat timid 11-year old in search of a family and a better life. With his mother in rehab and his father out of the picture lives with his grandmother (Lonette McKee) in suburban Baltimore and longs for his family to be reunited. His charismatic Uncle Vincent (Common) has recently returned home after eight years in prison, determined to straighten out his life by opening a high-end crab shack that will establish him as a solid citizen with a legitimate future. Soon Vincent finds himself pulled back into the violent world he is trying to escape- and Woody has to decide whether to follow his hero- or become his own man.”

During the span of 24 hours, he is taught valuable lessons in manhood on the streets of Baltimore as his Uncle Vincent attempts to turn his life around and start a new business. Instead, his past catches up to him and they run into circumstances that involve guns, drugs, theft and bloodshed. The film sheds a light on inmates who come out of the prison system and want to do right but are not giving a fair chance so they are thrust back into a life of crime.

This is Common’s first movie as a producer and appeared the Sundance Film Festival 2012.
