ハーレムがどんどんお洒落に変身しています。昨年の秋に開店したフレンチ・ビストロ、「セドリック」が地元の人たちの間で話題になっています。もちろん料理がおいしいというのも理由ですが、何でも「人種差別」でボイコットいうニュースで盛り上がっているらしいのです。

ことの発端は２月のある日、政治家のInez Dickens, Ms. Rosamonde Pierre-Louis を含む黒人女性４人組が「セドリック」を訪れたことに始まります。

ワインを飲みながら和気藹々と食事をしていた彼女たちは、次の予約のお客さん、それも白人のグループが到着したのでどいてくれ、とお店の人から立ち退きを求められたのです。彼女たちの言い分によると、「まだ食事も終わっていないのに早く帰れとは何ごとだ。」と思ったけれど、言われるままに清算を済ませ、違うテーブルに移動したといいます。まぁ、お店の要求に従順に従ったのです。ところが、彼女たちを激怒させたのは立ち退きを要求されたことではなく、オーナーのコメントだったのです。

入り口近くの狭いテーブルに移らされた彼女たちは何となくしっくりいきません。そこで後になって、オーナーに「なぜ私たちがどかないといけないのか。」と聞いてみたのです。「次の予約のお客さまが到着したからです。うちの常連のお客さまです。（あなたたちと違って）この人たちは地元のコンドを購入している（お金持ちだ）からです。」というオーナーの言葉にむかっときたというのです。

彼女たちにしてみれば、「私たちはハーレムでも有力な女性たち。ハーレムの長年の住人だし、白人たち以上に地元でお金を使っている。白人のために私たち黒人を追い出すのは人種差別以外の何でもない！」と怒りがこみ上げてきたのも当然です。彼女達の怒りが頂点に達したのはオーナー、セドリックが「あんた達が何年ハーレムに住んでいようが関係ない。うちは商売でやっているんだ。」と他の客にもきこえるような大声で叫んだ瞬間です。地元ハーレムのビジネスをずっと支えてきた彼女達黒人のことなんかどうでもよい、という態度にとても腹が立ったのです。彼女たちは、「ここのオーナーはレイシスト（差別主義者）、この店に誰も来ないようにボイコット運動をする。」と店のオーナー、セドリック(Cedric Lecendre)に決闘状をたたきつけたのです。数日後、ハーレムの地元紙「アムステルダム・ニュース」に彼女達が送った抗議文が掲載されました。

オーナー側の主張は彼女達のストーリーとはちょっと違っています。

「忙しい土曜日の4時から彼女達はずっといたんです。もう食事も終わっていました。彼女たちのテーブルは7時半から次の予約が入っていました。そのお客さんが到着したので席を移ってくれるようお願いしたのです。うちにとってお客さんはみな平等です。黒人、白人、お金持ちとかそうでないとか関係ありません。残念ながら彼女達には不愉快な思いをさせてしまったことは事実なのできちんと謝罪しましたよ。」と黒人差別を真っ向から否定。

彼女達はワインを3本飲み、移動したあともさらに3時間ほど飲み続けたといいますからだいぶ酔っぱらっていたのかもしれません。オーナーにしてもこの厳しいニューヨークのレストラン業界で闘ってゆくのですからフツウの神経ではないはずです。お互いかぁ〜っときて売り言葉に買い言葉……..というノリだったのかもしれません。

この事件をめぐっていろいろな人がブログやフェイスブック、ツィターで論議をしたものだからタイヘン、本格的な黒人差別問題へと発展してしまいました。

特に差別的だったコメントを紹介します。

これはアフリカン・アメリカン（AA）のていたらくとしか言えませんね。だいたい、チャイニーズにしてもメキシカン、ギリシャ、イタリア、トルコ、ウクライナ、いろいろな移民がアメリカにやってきて一生懸命働いて自分たちのコミュニティーを築いて繁栄しているというのにAAときたら不平不満ばかり。低所得者用の住宅にタダみたいな値段で住んでフードスタンプをもらって学校も援助金で行けるし…..ヘロインやクラックのせいにして、悪いのは人種差別、白人、チンク……、みんな人のせい。AAの家に行って本の数を数えてみたことありますか。何冊あると思います？一冊がせいぜいですよ、それもその一冊は聖書。

こんなことを平気で言う人がいるのはちょっと驚きました。まず、この人のコメントとレストラン・ボイコットの内容とは全く関連がありません。アイネス女史たちは、セドリックのオーナーが黒人コミュニティーに対して全く敬意を払っていないことに抗議しているのです。黒人たちが怠け者で社会に甘えているという捉え方はうわべしか見ていないし、黒人の家庭には聖書一冊しか本がない、という指摘も黒人差別丸出しです。黒人社会をめぐる議論はそれこそエンドレスですが、私たち日本人も「関係ない」などと背を向けずにブラック・コミュニティーの問題と取り組んでいかなければいけないなぁと考えさせられました。

最後になってしまいましたが、「セドリック」のツナ・タルタルは絶品との評判です。ガカモレの上にツナが盛りつけられていて、まるで缶詰からそっくり出したようにキッチリ型がついています。フレンチ・ビストロですから当然「かたつむり」料理があります。そう、エスカルゴです。私は試していないのでわかりませんが、「100％本物のフレンチ」と人気があるようです。邪道かもしれませんが、ここのフィッシュ＆チップス（＄16）が美味なのでお薦めです。

An incident at the French bistro called Cedric at 185th St. Nicholas Avenue and 119th Street has gained a lot of media coverage since it reflects the conflicts of Harlem in a period of gentrification.

It was a busy Saturday night at the bistro Cedric in Harlem. A party of four with a 7:30 reservation walked in. The owner, Cedric Lecendre, asked another party, four women who had been at Tables 2 and 3 for a couple of hours, to move to tables that were closer to the entrance and the kitchen. He seated the party with the reservation at Tables 2 and 3.

The women who switched tables ordered more wine and dessert and stayed for almost three more hours. When they asked for the check, the four women, who were black, accused Mr. Lecendre of having moved them to make room for the people with the reservation, who were white. One of the women, Mignon Espy-Edwards, a marketing executive, said that they were angry, but that race was not the main reason. She said the other people “had purchased a condo and were friends of his.”

The party Ms. Espy-Edwards belonged to arrived around 4 p.m. “Our table had rotated with friends coming in and out,” Ms. Espy-Edwards recalled Tuesday, and shortly before Mr. Lecendre asked them to move, they paid the check, only to open another tab as a few more people arrived. One who was there early on but left before the table switch was Rosamonde Pierre-Louis, the deputy Manhattan borough president.

When Mr. Lecendre asked them to move, “We graciously gave up our seats,” they wrote in the letter to The Amsterdam News, describing the second table as “cramped seating” by the kitchen, bathroom and one of the restaurant’s entrances.

The letter also said that when they asked Mr. Lecendre why they had been moved, he said the people he seated in the front “were ‘regulars’ and he knew them, which is why he felt the need to accommodate them.”

According to the letter, when the women told Mr. Lecendre that they were repeat customers and longtime Harlem residents, “he responded, ‘I do not care about longtime residents of Harlem, I am running a business.’ ”

Mr. Lecendre said that was only a part of his response when Ms. Espy-Edwards questioned him about how he decided where to seat customers. “The answer I told Mignon was, ‘I don’t care about Harlem, I don’t care about black or white, I don’t care about man or woman, I don’t care if you have money or not — when you come in that door, everyone is equal,” he said at the restaurant on Tuesday.

Ms. Espy-Edwards said Mr. Lecendre had sent her and the other women an apology last week, but he did not explain his comment about moving them to make room for his regulars.

The Chinese came to the USA in the 19th Century, mostly to either mine for gold in California, or to work on the railroads. The Chinese have dealt with nothing but Racism for over 150 years, yet they endure, they form their own communities, the create their own economies, and they prosper. No Chinese person will ever blame white people for the state of their culture nor for their standard of living.
To consider any group of Asians, particularly east Asians, they consistently prosper here in the USA. For them it is the land of opportunity.
You can look at many immigrant groups to NYC and USA in general. They often prosper. Greeks, Italians, Arabs, Turks, Armenians, Ukrainians, all these people came from difficult circumstances, yet they strive and they succeed.
Even with all of the opportunities afforded to AA’s, especially under the EEOC (equal opportunity programs) which encourage and even demand racial quotas in the workplace; even with loads of public housing (meaning practically free) and Food Stamps (more free stuff), and with easily acquired funding for schools via grants and loans, even with all these advantages and opportunities to enter the workforce, still, African Americans form the basis of most Ghettos and Urban Blight in America today.
Black People- You Failed. Blame the Heroin, Blame the Crack, Blame Institutional Racism, Blame Whitey, Blame the Chinks, Blame the Spics, Blame the Irish.
Go into an AA’s house and count the Books.
How many? Maybe One. Most likely there is a Bible in the house.

I think that may be the most ignorant and racist thing I have seen written in a LONG time.

By the way, the food is great! Try Tuna Tartar – the way in which Cedric seasoned the tuna and placed it on top of delicious guacamole made the dish utterly irresistible. The Escargot, Foie Gras, Chilean Seabass are highly recommended.
