ハーレム・デイケアのあつし先生
ハーレムで子供たちにアートを教えている日本人の先生がいます。大橋篤司（おおはしあつし）さんです。北海道出身、東京の芸大を卒業、自身も絵画/彫刻などアーティストとして個展やグループ展を開催、現在は自分の作品制作のほか、ニューヨークの幼稚園児から大人まで幅広くアートを教えています。
人種のるつぼと言われるだけあって、本当にいろいろな人たちがいます。人種、文化、歴史、背景などまったく異なる人たちにアートを教えるのってとても大変なのでは…….。ハーレムのデイケアでもアートを教えているというのでさっそくあつし先生のクラスにおじゃますることにしました。場所はモーニングサイドの155丁目、この日は４歳児ばかり15人の教室で、先週に続いてお絵描きをするとのこと。え〜、４歳児ってちゃんと絵が描けるんですか……。
あつし先生によると、アメリカでは子供の能力を尊重して親やまわりの人間が手伝わずに本人ひとりでやらせる場合が多いとのこと。あつし先生のやり方はすこし違います。「子供によって能力はまちまちです。自分ひとりでできてしまう子もいればそうでない子もいます。どうしてよいかわからない子には僕は途中まで助けてあげて最後の仕上げは自分でさせてあげるようにします。そうすれば達成感が得られるので次からは自分ひとりでやるようになります。」
いつも準備は入念にします。この日のテーマは「家族」です。ハーレム地区の子供たちの家族構成はまちまちです。お母さんやお父さん、妹、兄といった関係だけでなく、従兄弟、叔母さん、フォスター・ペアレンツなど、さまざまな形態です。それにまだ人間の姿をそのまま表現する力もまだ発達していません。ですから、姿、形はまちまち。ベィビーは小さいという概念はもうわかっているようですが、お父さんとお母さんの大きさがばらばらだったり、面白い発見も多いのです。
さまざまな年齢を教えているあつし先生、今、３歳児と４歳児を毎週受け持っているのですが、たった一歳しか違わないのに描ける絵は全然違うのだそうです。たとえば、３歳児の子供はまだ形を認識することができないそうです。できたとしてもそれを絵で表現できる子は非常に稀なのだそうです。ところが４歳児になると形という概念がしっかりできて、トレースすることができるようになるそうです。
30分ほどのクラスですが、終わったあとは額にうっすら汗が……..。あつし先生を見ていて、「情熱があるなぁ。」と感心しました。「みんなにアートを身近に感じてもらいたいんです。アートを楽しいと思ってくれるようになればバッチリですね。」
あつし先生が教えているのはアートだけではありません。実はチェルシーにある道場で少林寺拳法も教えています。大拳士5段。子供/大人の両方のクラスがあるそうです。ウェブサイトがあるのでチェックして見て下さい。

Atsushi Sensei Teaches Art in Harlem Wonderland
Atsushi Ohashi, better known as Atsushi Sensei, has been teaching art for more than 20 years. After graduating from the Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music, he taught sculpture at the university from 1989 to 1994. Today, he teaches art throughout the New York City area including instructing four-year-olds at the Morningside Daycare Center in Harlem.
“Making learning art fun is at the core of my program,” says Sensei. In his art classes, children paint, draw, sketch, sculpt and explore using a wide variety of artist materials and techniques, all in an atmosphere of fun and success. Children progress through the elements of art such as line, color, shape, etc. and create beautiful artworks in the process. He encourages each child to express their individual personality, resulting in unique and original creations by each student.
Sensei believes early art education is very important. He spends several hours planning and preparing for each class and customizes his approach according to the age of his students. He is dedicated to developing the child’s potential and is sensitive to the child’s individual needs. “Three-year-olds and four-year-old may not be so different to you, but from teaching point of view, it’s quite different,” he says. “For example, a three-year-old only can match pictures to objects but four-year-olds can cut on a line.”
After observing Sensei, you are impressed by his complete physical and mental commitment to his classes. After teaching 15 kids hands on for thirty minutes, he’s covered in perspiration. “To watch each child develop into a happy and confident learner, ready for lifelong success…, that is my goal,” he states.
In addition to his art education, Sensei also teaches Shorinji Kempo and holds the title of Dai Kenshi Go Dan.
